Flyers acquire rights to Mark Streit

mirtle: Flyers acquire Streit from the Isles.

mirtle: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on Streit: "We are hopeful that we can get an agreement in place prior to him becoming an unrestricted free agent.?

mirtle: Flyers traded prospect Shane Harper and a fourth round pick to Isles for Streit. Imagine they'll have him locked up shortly.

TSNBobMcKenzie: PHI will now negotiate a deal with Streit. Have to believe compliance buyouts are in the works for Bryzgalov and Briere to free up cap space

TSNBobMcKenzie: Streit, BTW, is a 35+ contract, meaning cap hit counts even if he retires/quits. Likely be looking for long-term deal in $5M/yr range.

Dreger says he's looking for a 4 year deal and McKenzie says between 4 and 5 million.

That's a spicy meatball.

He was drafted at 26? Is that possible? Anyways, he's been pretty durable over his career so that mitigates the risk somewhat.

Yeah, compliance buyouts are going to be the only way this one gets done. Amazing if Bryz is one of them - what a waste of money.

The Flyers sure are putting a ton of cash on their blueline - if Streit signs for $5M, they'd have ~$28M tied up there (not including Pronger).

Seems like the cost of acquiring pending unrestricted free agents is going up.  If I recall, Dan Hamhuis cost a 4'th a few years ago.  I think the Timmonen - Hartnell combo had cost Philadelphia little more than that.  I'm not sure what type of prospect Shane Harper is, but it seems like a lot to get someone that, if they want sign with you, can do so at no acquisition cost in just a few weeks.

He certainly helps them out offensively.  Pretty bad defensive player though.  However given that their 2nd best scoring defenseman was Luke Schenn with 11 points, it's probably going to make Philadelphia a lot better.

It's not anymore, but, in the pre-cap era, it wasn't unheard of for European players - though, it obviously wasn't commonplace.

TSNBobMcKenzie: Streit is a 35 and over contract so even if he quits/retires, he will continue to count against PHI cap for the duration of the contract.

There's some rumbling that the cap hit on this one is $5.5M per, and, like with Malkin's extension, this one is not technically official, though the reasoning is different - the Flyers have to sort out a cap/tagging space issue before file this one with the league.

EDIT:

DarrenDreger: Streit is 4 years at $5.25 mil per. Confirmed. (No seagulls).

DarrenDreger: Streit's agreement will also include a limited no-trade. He would submit a list of teams he would be willing to move to.

Not including Pronger, the Flyers have 6 defencemen with a cap hit of $3.5mil or more. And 5 of them have some sort of no-trade/move protection (although Schenn's is only available in the final year of his contract).

Unless they manage to trade a contract or two, this and buying out Bryzgalov and Briere will essentially be the Flyers' offseason. After the buyouts, they'll have ~$63M committed against a $64.3M cap.

Steve Mason, #1 goalie!

They were pretty bad defensively last year (Bryz was bad, but still). So they get better offensively but I'm not sure this is the answer to their problems......at all.

Maybe Read, Couturier and Schenn take big steps this year? Voracek and Giroux are the only really sure things on the team IMO.

I actually read a pretty good flyers blog quite a lot.  They really didn't think Bryz was bad for most of the year -- it was the team defense that just wasn't good enough.

Going with going with Mason as number 1 goalie and who knows as backup has the potential to be the most epic train wreck I can possibly think of.  I'm looking forward to it.  :-)

Paul Holmgren is this close to being fired. He's made some pretty bad moves in the last couple of years after having some success. If the Flyers don't turn it around next season he's probably gone.

Aside - If they do fire Laviolette, something that seems unlikely at this point, I'd love to see Tortorella in Philly. How great of a fit is that? Imagine him interacting with the vicious Philly fans and media. Never a dull day...

Pronger will be on LTIR which would drop them to $57.3 (given I think they're allowed to be 10% over until the end training camp) needing to sign a goalie and forward for a 23 man roster.
