Willie "OT" Nylander.

Knies...please keep him off the first line for a while.

Good night all.
Time for the 89 16 34..
As much as I'd love to lay it on  Bert even tho he took a dumb penalty, this is on Gregor more then anyone. Leafs were cruising until his stupid penalty. I don't think he saw the ice after it. I'm so done with him.

Knies needs to be firmer on that exit. If the wall is sealed, a fly by poke is not going to do it. Especially with a 2G lead late in the game.

Built like a truck but wants to dance like a butterfly

He came into the league with that bad habit and playing with Matthews and Marner only seems to have reinforced it.

It's the pressure of trying to get the puck out for them. All in all though I have little issue with Knies.  He's learning on the go and will make his fair share of mistakes...Someone mentioned it before, once Knies figures out how strong he is, he'll run guys over.  I do think he needs to be sheltered a lil bit going forward for now. Give 89 and 74 a shot top 6.

You know what every other team in the NHL needs? A Bertuzzi.

I have the feeling that if he did go elsewhere all of a sudden he'd score about 10 goals in 15 games.

As for that fight by Deslauriers, you could see Benoit was concerned about the fact he was stood with his skates either side of a prone player lying on the ice while Deslauriers came charging in with no regard for it. We've 2 stores of major skate cuts that led to or almost led to death in the last while. Why be so stupid.

It's crazy to think that there's going to be a guy who could very well score 70 goals this season and he'll likely be at best a distant 3rd in the Hart race.

If he scores 70, he def could win it. The hardest thing to do in the NHL is score goals so if he finishes with a good lead like he did when he got 60 he has a good shot. Nobody has scored 70 in over 30 years. Doesn't hurt he's one of the games best 200 foot players is 5th in ESP def works in his favour.

I strongly suspect the vast majority of those were scored in a higher scoring era.

I'd guess when that is taken into account, Matthews goal scoring to date this season is probably something like a top 5 result in NHL history.

It is a lot more special than top 21.

No question. The vast majority would have been in the 80s and early 90s. Doing it today is a much harder accomplishment.

It?s also worth mentioning, he?s done it while having had stretches of 1 goal in 7 and 1 in 9. Without those colder stretches, he?d easily have hit 50 in 50, and we?d probably be talking out the possibility of him getting to 80 goals instead 70.

Again, not to sell Auston short, but this season is trending to be a higher scoring era. Not 80s/early 90s level when pads were deflated couch cushions and goalies were chain smokers, but there just aren?t that many prime goalies left right now, and every shooter has a tutor. Salary Cap probably has something to do with it as well given that most teams need to dip into a third stringer that no one claims on waivers.

Fully set goalie made to look like a plastic colander for collard greens.

The narration doesn?t get into it too deeply but Ersson has no clue where the puck is going and has left a big gap by squaring to the puck when Matthews settles into his shooting posture, cheating a bit to blocker side since he?s facing a left shot (shorter puck travel distance/less reaction time).

Obviously he doesn?t have much experience against Matthews (and probably doesn?t want any more), so he gets completely fished by the drag and curl wrister (x2). Matthews can pull the trigger at any point along that drag distance. Having deception built into your standard shooting motion is such a ridiculous cheat code, but Matthews also has the size and stick whip and hands to combine that deception with pace and pinpoint placement.

Sportslogiq data shows Matthews is spending less time digging for pucks (just fanning out to get open), firing more one-timers, and picking on five hole and low-mid glove space.
