Franson signed (1 year, 2M)

The deal works for me, and if Franson can continue to put up numbers like he did last season he'll get the term and raise he desires on his next contract (though perhaps not from the Leafs)

So how does the cap situation look okay now?

That's not an easy question to answer since we don't quite know how the roster will look, but here's my best guess:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Kulemin
Raymond-Bolland-Colborne
McLaren-McClement-Orr
Clarkson

Gunnarsson-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Ranger
Fraser-Franson
Liles

Reimer
Bernier

That's with Clarkson suspended, and assuming McLaren, Bolland, and Orr will all be healthy opening night. That roster gives us $333,333 in cap space. So if one of those guys are hurt, we're screwed.

I've said this before, but I think it would make a lot of sense to send Fraser to the minors, at least to start the season. One of he, Liles, or Ranger are going to be sitting in the pressbox and for a team this close to the cap it doesn't make sense to have your 7th defencemen making between $1mi-3.875mil. I think the odds of Liles or Ranger being sent down are pretty low, so that just leaves Fraser. If/when Nonis clears up some space by trading Liles then he can be called back up without the risk of re-entry waivers.

If Fraser is sent down, we'll have $1,258,333 in cap space. That's enough to potentially call up both Brennan ($600k) and Bodie ($600k) if injuries strike, but likely the Leafs would have to keep them off the roster for as long as possible to bank some cap space.

Oh, and sorry Rielly, but you're playing in the WHL again this season.

Maybe I'm missing something?

There seems, according to capgeek, at least two extra forwards (Colburne, Smith) and one extra defenceman (Holtzer)...even if we lose Smith and Holtzer, we just squeeze under the cap? Its only 1 mil Nonis has to come up with...well, 1.05 as 995,000 was available before Franson? Thoughts? Yes, tight if there are more injuries for sure.

Looks right to me. And, yeah, it looks like Rielly is headed back to Moose Jaw, unless there's a trade prior to next Tuesday.

Franson for 2mil is a steal. 4th in points for the reg. season, and tied for 2nd in the playoffs. Even if your paying just for his offense alone, how can you beat getting him signed for that amount?

I think we'll see some improvement in his defensive game this year, and he'll become a pretty solid all-around D man.

Tough off season next year for Nonis though, unless they are working on a Kessel deal now. They have a lot of big pieces to put together, cap wise that is.

Really hope the salary cap increases heavily next year.  Otherwise we are going to be in the same predicament next year.

Who wouldn't like Franson at 2 million? But, I'm worried about the same situation next off-season with him. I would try for a long term deal throughout the season, if at all possible.

I think Kessel is going to be signed in the next few days, Phaneuf doesn't mind negotiating during the season, so Nonis could pull it off, but he's going to have to earn his keep to avoid a lot of hands out in July.

Great deal, but I wish it was for a longer period.

Prominent free agents next summer:

UFA: Kessel, Phaneuf, Bolland, Kulemin, McClement, Raymond, Ranger, Fraser
RFA: Gardiner, Riemer, Franson

Nonis obviously can't wait until next June to start working on contracts. 11 names on that list. It'd be nice if at least 4 of them could be re-sign early in the season. Hopefully we can cross off either Kessel or Phaneuf pretty early. If I'm Nonis I start working on something for Kulemin and McClement too as their demands shouldn't be too high. By December if things are on track for Ranger and Franson I would try to get at least one of them signed to a long-term contract. Let Raymond and Fraser walk, and you only have to deal with Kessel or Phaneuf, Ranger or Franson, Gardiner, Reimer, and Bolland in the summer.

I like the signing/number just like everyone here but I'm seeing a lot of people talk about Franson and next summer and I can't help but feel like all this deal does is delay the inevitable. Leave Liles alone for a moment, I don't think this team's top 4 going forward can realistically be Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly and Franson for any number of reasons so if one of those guys isn't in your long term plans shouldn't plans be made to that effect now? We've all seen the sort of promise that Rielly is showing and Phaneuf seems like the two way guy of the bunch so I can't help but feel as though with both Gardiner and Franson's contract coming up signing both of them to long term deals is inherently a bad idea and the team should at the very least have an eye towards moving, if not actively shopping, one of them.

Can Liles play left-wing?  ;)

I really like the way the back-end is set up.

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Ranger
Fraser - Franson
Liles

Bernier/Reimer

Lots of mobility, maybe not as physical as some of the previous bluelines, but definitely more of a new age defense. And lots of talent between the pipes; one very athletic, technically sound goalie, and one who gets the job done.

Probably more relevant in the GM thread but, responding to CTB's proposed roster, I think Carter Ashton makes the team.  If so, and assuming he replaces one of Orr or McLaren, how does that impact the cap?
