Good deal, if he produces at close to the same clip as last year, he is going to get a massive raise next season.

For instance, if the Leafs trade Liles and say they are retaining $1 million of his salary against the cap, does that pertain to each year remaining on his deal or strictly this year?
It would be for every season remaining on the deal.

In the CBA it specifically says that you can only retain salary for each of the remaining years of a players contract.

I get that you don't get rid of guys before you have a full set of players to work with, but I think the Leafs have enough of a crop of defensemen in the system that buying out Liles would have been a good gamble.
Especially since his hit would have only been 875k for this year. I thought it was the best move based on what's going down right now. It's not like this situation we're in right now wasn't going to play out like this, we saw this coming.

maybe he has a taker for him, if he keeps some salary or takes some back. Cheaper long-term than a buyout hit for 8 years or whatever.

Dave, now lock Phil Kessel long term please.

Franson won't walk next year, as he's still RFA, but it'll make negotiations tougher, since Franson will have arbitration rights intact.
The bigger thing to me is that with arbitration, Franson will only get a 1-2 year deal, if he elects to go to arbitration. I'd rather have him signed long term. Hopefully they can work it out before arbitration.
Deebo said:Arbitration hearing don't really happen with much frequency these days. Shea Weber was only arbitration case that actually went to a hearing in the last 3 offseasons.
Big Daddy said:Hey there. I have a question that one of you may know the answer too. Since have Franson signed today and this years cap hit is 2M. How long of a waiting period does Nonis have to wait to sign Franson to an extension. I mean can he not sign a three year 9M extension tomorrow. Therefore a cap hit of 2M this year 3m next year. So whats the waiting period to sign an extension, if any?
