Game 44: Islanders @ Leafs - Apr. 18, 7:00pm - LeafsTV, TSN 1050

I hate to agree with Millen but there's no doubt the complexion of the game changed drastically after those two fights. The Leafs had all the momentum going into them after the 2 goals and the big PK kill and then *poof*.

What was the added benefit to the Leafs in entertaining even one never mind two fights at that time?

I just tuned in but I have noticed that other teams will turn down a scuffle with our goon squad when they are leading while our team does not seem as judicious.

was it the fights? or the two penalties for playing hockey?  ..the first one they killed off..the second one they didn't ..they played differently after that

As I said, they had a 2-0 lead and had killed off the 5 on 3 before the two fights happened. The second penalty occurred after the two fights, and the momentum had already clearly shifted by that point.

There are far more problems with the Leafs than the 2 fights in this game, don't get me wrong. But clearly the fights had some impact on the team's psyche and/or the Isles'. So the real question is what was the reasoning for Orr and McLaren engaging in those fights? The team already had momentum, energy and confidence.

Wow. How a team can play so poorly is beyond me.

Well, we will see which team shows up on Saturday against the sens.

So is it too stupid/pessimistic of me to actually be worried about the Leafs making the playoffs at all now?

After last season's collapse, this team needs to get all the way to the finish line before I will feel safe. If they weren't being outplayed so badly the last little while, I wouldn't be worried at all.

I understand, but statistically there really is no reason to worry.  It would take a complete collapse by us AND a whole bunch of other improbable stuff to happen with the teams chasing us for that to happen.

Not so sure about that. Leafs have 4 games left -- 3 on the road. I can see this thing snow balling and Leafs losing all 4 games

I know the odds but if they keep playing like this they could drop all of the remaining 4 games.

Then Winnipeg just needs to win tonight (leading 2-1) and then win 3 of their last 4, and the Rangers (already winning 6-1 tonight) need win 3 or their last 5 and our epic collapse would be complete.

Justifying their existence I guess.  Of course they managed to not fight in the Washington game when the team could have used a boost.  And of course have not fought when the Leafs lost all the momentum because other teams tough guys seem intelligent enough to not kill the momentum of the 2-goal lead.  But hey, Orr has 13 fights so hooray.

Ho boy.

I yield to no one in embracing pessimism, but people -- seriously -- the Leafs are NOT going to miss the playoffs.  All this hand-wringing borders on the embarrassing.

Gardiner has been absolutely awful in this game.  He pinches every single play without even checking to see if the forward is in position to cover for him.  He's weak on the puck in the defensive zone and wanders out of position a lot.  Not exactly sure why he is still getting ice time given all of that.

This is why I wasn't getting my hopes up unless it was 100% that they were in. Anything can happen and it just might. I want to be wrong on this.

Ugh, Jets and Sens win. Leafs are cursed. Harold Ballard curse!  >:(

I won't cheer for any other team, but dang it's hard being a Leafs fan!
