Game 46: Leafs @ Lightning - Apr. 24, 7:00pm - TSN, TSN 1050

I'm very curious to see what Carlyle does tomorrow night. Before the game I just assumed that he would swap the goon line in for Florida because, well, it's Carlyle. But I don't know how he can justify benching the Colborne line after the night they've had. I do hope that he puts Liles and Gardiner in though.

Well it's obvious that the Leafs lost because they were intimidated by St.Louis taunts and his physical play. With Orr and McLaren in we probably wouldn't have heard from him all night.  8)

Seriously though my guess is he still puts in the goons. He did say he wants to give everyone some PT before the playoffs, and the back to back + a loss will help him further justify putting them back in (even though that line played pretty well).

I really hope I'm wrong though.

tmlfans.ca is so much better at score updates than mapleleafs.com. MLSE should be paying YOU guys!

it's funny you mention that. I have an app on my iPhone that alerts me every time there's a goal scored in a Leaf game??but  if it's a Leaf goal, the corresponding Bear is posted here long before I get the app alert (which is a MLSE thingie in the first place). So, yeah, we're faster :D

You're quick! lol!

The best thing about the Toronto Maple Leafs is fan sites like this haha.  8)

Ok I'm sad that the Leafs lost tonight, but glad Kessel scored. He's become my new favorite. Which probably means that he'll leave or be traded by the time his contract runs out. Always the case with the Leafs.  :(

I'm afraid there is reason for concern going into the playoffs.  Very poor effort tonight.  Far too many breakdowns, Reimer quite average.  Also concerning is Kadri is not doing much.  I think the Isles will overtake them and it will be the Caps, which isn't good.  They will eat up our defensive miscues.

I hope I'm wrong, but reason for concern.

They have not played a good dominant game since the win over Montreal. They seem so disjointed defensively and a big part of that is the forwards not getting back to help, there seems to be a big gap way to often.

Pretty disappointing loss.  I thought they came out relatively well in the 1st, but fell apart after that.  If only those early posts had gone in.. alas.

Pretty much expected this. We've been awful defensively for awhile now.

Out in 5 no doubt about it.

Against Washington? Probably

Against Montreal you could flip a coin with the way things are going for both teams

I'm not expecting this team to make it anywhere past the first round but compared to last year, I'm just glad they made it to some sort of respectability.

But seriously, they have to improve their play and give it a fighting chance.

I just hope they make it far into the playoffs a year before Kessel leaves. Yes, I'm being fatalistic lol. Ain't no way he'd stay here if he had a choice.

Totally disgusted with tonights performance. Team had a good chance to control it's destiny, possibly move up and at the very least not falter but not sure where they are going to end up. With that on the line they s**t the bed again. Team needs to shore up it's giveaways and still to this day don't understand why guys can't take the body in our own end more often. Shinny hockey at it's best. Think the biggest problem is our defensive play which includes the forwards but I think Nonis could have picked up some better help at the deadline other than O'Byrne and Fraser is not an NHL defenceman not full time. Don't know what to expect from these guys come next week but if Reimer doesn't carry us I don't think we are going to be around very long. Let's hope I'm wrong. Nonetheless tired of this sloppy hockey.

Personally, I'm shocked. I was under the impression everything wrong with the Maple Leafs this year was Orr and McLaren's fault.

Tampa may suck, but Stamkos and St. Louis are both amazing players. Crazy how invisible Lecavalier was for most of the game though.

Fans of the Bruins, Canadiens, Sens, and Rangers (to mention a few) can all say the same thing about their teams heading into the playoffs. So, while there is reason for concern, it's spread out pretty evenly among the eastern conference teams. Once a team 'officially' makes the Dance, they seem to ease up a little on the accelerator. It's pretty normal. It's how a team reacts once the pressure picks up again in the post season that matters most.

Wow, that was an unbelievably awful display from Phaneuf there.

Why was it "unbelievably awful"........seems pretty common to me.

The beat goes on.

Dion Phaneuf played 10.7 minutes against Stamkos and the Leafs allowed four chances in that span. If you think that looks bad, consider that Steven Stamkos got 5.4 minutes against everybody but Phaneuf and the Lightning got four scoring chances during that span. Phaneuf's been playing around 24 minutes lately but his minutes were curtailed, as Carlyle said they would be, down to 21:08 in this game, and the Leafs generally struggled defensively with him off the ice.

With Phaneuf on the ice at even strength, the Leafs out-shot the Bolts 10-4. With Phaneuf off the ice at even strength, the Leafs were out-shot 16-18. These things aren't always coincidences.

I still find it odd that Tampa have the top 2 scores in the league and they still can't make the playoffs.
