Philly Goons faceoff against the Leafs, tonight.

The Leafs still only 4 points away from the #2 overall pick

scoreboard to track tonight:
Pens @ Isles (well, miracles can happen twice, right ?)
Florida @ Minny

Go Philly Go, I just want to see a Hartnell vs Phaneuf fight.

Be interesting to see if Scrivens starts - unless he was sent back down?  It got confusing yesterday.

mirtle: Leafs playing musical goalies for some reason... RT @jonasTSN1050: As expected, Rynnas has been recalled to back up.

I heard they called up Scrivens just to give him a days pay at the NHL level.. a little reward kind of thing.

I wonder how many teams do this and moreover, I'm wondering how much this type of thing is noticed by players and agents.

Scrivens was only called up for a day to reward him with NHL $$$ for the day.

Gus gets the start tonight.

Tank Nation should be able to put their feet up and relax tonight..... but that is always the time that the Leafs do the unexpected.

And to give the NHL's 4 call-up rule the middle finger.

Me too.

At times like this, it could be a reward to the fans to see some prospects during otherwise meaningless games. Maybe no playoff clubs could get some relief  to help overcome competitive concerns. And it might help them evaluate talent for next year. It could be a win-win-win for the club, the young players who earned a look and the fans of a club bound for early tee times.

Could it be there so that teams don't try to ice a lousy team to tank?

I do not get this rule either, especially for those teams already eliminated. Kids get a chance, a team gets a better look on its prospects, games are therefore less meaningless, fans have something to cheer and talk about, and "new Muskoka 5" can enjoy golfing weak or two sooner.

My guess is that it was put in place for a different reason: to minimize teams trying to get around the CBA.

I think the commissioner powers already exist to deal with a situation where a team calls up their four worst ECHLers for example - purposely tanking. Obviously, it's harder to deal with the grey areas around the edges of doing something like that - but that can exist to some extent even without such a rule: ie play the backup goalie the rest of the way and give your bottom eight (of 14) forwards and bottom 3 dmen top ice time.

Edit: of course, it doesn't stop a guy like Devereaux from scoring a hat trick...  :)

My guess is that it's a little of both - it eliminates a lot of the grey areas in terms of intentional tanking and some cap shenanigans. I don't like it either, but, I certainly understand some of the things they were trying achieve with it.
