So you put a solid goalie on that team and then what? They would have dominated?

They would have made the playoffs. I'd bet my life on that if I could.

Oh, you most certainly can....

Nah, just a run of the mill Grim Reaper.

I tried for the angel of death, but I think I made the right choice.

Carlyle on Smithson to waivers "we felt we have players ahead of him, simple as that"

Makes sense. I mean McLaren AND Orr have played more games than him.  I guess that makes them "ahead of him".

I can't wait until the injuries get blamed as the only reason this team misses the playoffs.

I mean, sure, they have guys that play down the middle that I'd put ahead of him, but, they don't have 12 healthy forwards that I'd put ahead of him. At least, not on the roster right now.

I was just chatting with another poster about this, the whole notion of what the 4th line brings to the table needs revamped, a philosophical change, losing Smithson isn't the end of the world as long as Grishnakh and Shagrat are lost in translation...

Unballanced attack, this top 6 and bottom six concept is killing the Leafs as the bottom six do not produce at all. No team in the NHL relies more on a core group to produce offence than do the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nice article form Jonas Siegel: "Seven players have combined for 84 per cent of the team's 74 goals this season, the highest such percentage for any team's top seven scorers in the league. Alarmingly among that group in Toronto are two centres, Dave Bolland and Tyler Bozak, who have each missed a month's worth of games due to injury already this season and yet remain amongst the team's scoring leaders."

yes...but not much of a standard to achieve there is it?

No, but the issue is still that the team removed a marginally useful forward instead of either of the two completely useless ones. They need to raise the usefulness of the bottom of the roster, not eliminate it.

I wholeheartedly agree!  I'm just happy they are sending down one crappy player...even if there are 2 others still there.

I'd be on cloud 9 if they went with mcclement as the C and with 2 grinding, hitting, tough kids on the wings as the 4th line right now.  Cause they look bad as things are...might as well put some young blood in there who can skate, hit and do it all in the oppositions end once in a while.

This team will miss the playoffs. All the tinkering in the world won't make up for the gaping flaws of Carlyle's dated and asinine coaching philosophies.

This team will not improve until he is gone.

I think Carlyle has got to go. He needs to stop tinkering with lines as is his habit and set some lines an try and turn team around before it is too late. Nonis needs to make a deal now while value of players are up. Send Liles, Franson and Kulmenin to Carolina for Gleason, Torres (I think it was and a draft pick or prospect. Or deal these to Colorado for Stasny.

Firstly, Carolina does not have a Torres in their organization, so I don't know who you're talking about. Secondly - Yikes. No. Gleason hasn't been healthy at all this season, he's just around the corner from being done and he has 2 more seasons on his contract @ $4M on the cap. I wouldn't give up any of those pieces for him alone, never mind all of them in a package where he's the key piece.

As for Stastny . . . I don't think the Avs move him right now. Not with the success they're having. Why would they mess with that? Time to move on from him for now.

This whole scenario is what concerns me most about the Leafs' current situation. I definitely see the possibility that Nonis will try to make a season saving type trade, and it will inevitably backfire, like so many other "season saving" trade attempts do. The team's issues run so much deeper than the talent on the roster.

Hampreacher said:
I meant Tommo Routtu. I really think that Kulmenin would become more productive offensively under a different coach.

Ruutu's contract is even worse than Gleason's - 2 more years @ $4.75M for a guy who can't seem to stay healthy, has only twice cracked 20 goals and has all of 5 points in 23 games this season. There's a very good reason the Canes' are looking to move him - he's not producing anywhere near the level that they're paying him. The Leafs already have one 3rd line type earning big money. They don't need to add a second that earns almost as much.

Deep thoughts drug up from the Dregs:

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger on TSN Radio "the Leafs' top line was very effective for the Leafs against the Sharks"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "the Leafs 4th line got trapped against the Sharks. That's what good teams do though"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "what's changed in this group? These are the same players that managed to beat down the Bruins and almost eliminate them"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "defensively they've been horrendous and their offense is coming from opportunistic plays not sustained pressure"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "the Leafs need to play Gardiner more. He's been in the doghouse. Guess what you don't have when you're shot blocking? The puck"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "I know Carlyle is trying to make Gardiner into a more well rounded defenseman but if he has the puck, he doesn't have to defend"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke 4h
Dreger "sure he's going to turn it over a few times but he can skate it out of trouble when half those guys can't make a first pass"

Same players? Sure. Except...

MacArthur (Speed)
Grabovski (Speed)
Frattin (Speed)
Komarov (Speed+Checking)
Hamilton (4th line upgrade)
Colborne (3rd line upgrade)
O'Byrne (> 12/13 Fraser, >>> 13/14 Fraser)
Kostka (> 13/14 Ranger)

Good news:

@reporterchris
Jerry D'Amigo and Josh Leivo have joined the #leafs from the AHL Marlies

Leafs don't mention Leivo though:

@LeafsPR
#Leafs have recalled forward Jerry D'Amigo from the Toronto Marlies (AHL). #TMLtalk

They might have to wait until Smithson clears waivers at noon to make it official.

Potvin29 said:
Paul Hendrick says Leivo isn't there, just D'Amigo.  Chris Johnston must be mistaken.

In any case, it's nice that D'Amigo gets a chance. I just hope he makes the most of it, as I feel he doesn't have too many (chances) left.
