Goaltending conundrum

IMO Burke needs to go after Marty Brodeur.  He would be a great mentor to Reimer and it would give the Leafs a fantastic goaltending tandem.

Who has brodeur 'mentored' that has gone on to be a starter of any significance in the NHL?

Rumor has it that leafs after Bernier who is unhappy in LA.

The Leafs need an experienced goaltender.  It makes no sense to go after Bernier who has not shown that he is any better than Reimer or Scrivens.

I just think a veteran presence in goal will be very good for the Leafs.  Look at how they did when they had Giguere.  Much better.

We don't want Brodeur when Luongo and Bernier are available. Both are longer term. Brodeur has had injury problems and could be done after this year.

I would not be averse to getting Giguere back (if this were possible).

As for Brodeur, I doubt he's the veteran 'keeper Burke would want.  While true that Brodeur was one of the keys to the Devils current Stanley Cup & playoff run, but on a team such as the Leafs, with a much worse defense (plus the issue of learning a new system), Brodeur would have to be back To his superb self for much of the season.

Can he be?

The guy took the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals.  Surely he has another year of at least above average goaltending in him.  I think he would be perfect with Reimer as the backup.  Reimer's not ready for prime time yet.  I think he would benefit with a year as the backup under his belt.  It will take the pressure off him and he will hopefully settle down.

I think there are two problems with that. For one, that's a very small sample size to be making that decision on vs. the 120 games of so-so play he's had the last two seasons. Also, I mean, it's not like Brodeur had a stunningly effective playoffs. Among the goalies who played 10 or more playoff games only Bryzgalov had a lower save percentage.

Brodeur's best playoff save percentage was .938.  The Devil's lost the series 4-2.  Although his save percentage might of been down (.917), the game they played might of been a little more open but got them 14 wins.  Leafs would be lucky as hell to give it a shot for a year or two with him in net.

The Leafs: where elephants go to die.

No thanks on Brodeur.  We had Giguere.  We have Allaire.  How much support and hand-holding do these imbeciles need?  Did Joseph get all this support when he was starting up?  Did Belfour?  No, they took hockey by the horns and got the job done.

In my eyes Burke losses all credibility when he say things like 'Reimer is the real deal' and is already planning on having him in his top 2 next year.

Am i the only one that thinks that Reimer looks like a  peewee house league goalie who is playing that position because he isn't a good enough skater?  I am not a goalie scout but I notice so many weaknessess in his game. It always looks like it takes such an effort to move side to side or up and down.  There is nothing about Reimer that screams natural goaltender.

I am certain that he is going to be the next Justin Pogge and will be buried in the minors in a couple years while Gustavsson will go on to thrive with someone like Detroit.

Sorry Burke, but Reimer is not and will never be the goalie you may think he is.

i called it...

You called the team. It's the thriving part that made Toronto give up on him. I'd like to see him play well, but would be pretty pissed if he thrived in Detroit.

Oh he will thrive.  He may even be the starter at some point and win cups with Detroit.  No guarantee of course, but faaaaar more likely than being in the dumps on Toronto.

For the Leafs to do well they depend on average or below average players to have career years and superhuman efforts in every game.  There's no system, no plan, no blueprint.

Detroit on the other hand has the right mix of smart veterans, young talent, intelligent coaching, development and scouting staff that infuses their team with a constant stream of success.

Gus saw that and made an intelligent decision by signing with Detroit after being seduced by Burke to sign with the stupidest and most incompetent team in the league.

Or...he becomes Detroit's conundrum.  8)
