Holzer Extended

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie
Holzer deal in TOR is $725K and $850K over next two years. AAV is $787.5K. Was scheduled to be Group 6 UFA this summer.

Solid deal for a 6/7 guy. Now we just need to find a way to bump him down there.

Cap hit up 212,500 from this year.

I expect we'll see a similar deal for Fraser and maybe Kostka too.

Can't complain about that. Decent money for a stay at home guy. A little easier to swallow than $4.5M, eh?

A lot of people needlessly berating this deal on twitter.

Another confirmation that people will complain about anything.

Yeah I'm just surprised it's coming from so called Leafs fan bloggers, the same crowd that are banging the Carlyle is a moron drum.

Peanuts for a stay at home solid defense...you have to have guys like him to pay the Kessels, Lupuls, Kadris and Frattins

They're basically just saying it doesn't make sense to extend a player right now that they think has been bad.

I'm not too bothered by it as long as he's sent down if someone better is ready.

Yeah but it's not like it will be difficult to get rid of him if need be

Sorry, am I missing something?  While certainly I'd agree Holzer is not yet the second coming of Adam Foote, I think he's played really, really well.  Great first pass, skates well, big body (though he should use it more) and has chipped in with a bit of offense.  No issue with this deal, or with the player, at all, and I'm not sure he's nearly the first of the six starters to be moved or sent down should a better option arise.

I have no issues with Holzer and even less with the salary.  He hasn't been a problem on the back end and he's making budget money.  How can you complain about that?

Less than 900k so he doesn't count against the cap if he is demoted.

Bingo...that's an important point. Not that he'd be much over that mark without being overpaid, but this is something that teams will want to take into consideration to avoid dead cap space...

I don't think the deal is a particularly bad one but I'm still generally unsure of Holzer and what his future is. I'm not sure he's going to be the sort of really steady bottom pairing guy that is probably his ceiling.

You mean you're not sure he's going to be the guy he has been for 15 games at the NHL level and, by all accounts, has been for the last two years?  This is not a Lonny Bohonos offensive flash-then-fizzle we're talking about.  We're dealing with a big, strong skating, first-pass defenseman in the mold, frankly, of Carl Gunnarsson.  I think what you're seeing is what you're going to get and the Leafs are fortunate to have him at this salary.

I suppose that where we might disagree is the extent to which Holzer has been that in his time here and his ability to do it at a high enough level for a championship club.

Like you, I think he tops out as a strong bottom pairing guy, he might improve on that once he better adapts to the pace of the NHL game.

I have not been overly struck by him as a liability, the main issue I see is when you do look at stats, he is the poorest dman on the club and is definitely not ready for first pairing duty.

Phaneuf needs to be paired with Gunnarsson again asap.

All that being said it's pretty stunning that people would take issue with this contract, it in no way shape or form handcuffs the team and worst case scenario it guarantees Holzer some decent cash in the AHL for being a good soldier and not moaning about lack of opportunity over the years.
