Hunwick done for the season

I actually think his shot's been good lately although he hasn't scored.  His whole game seems to be blossoming.  You have to hope he's our Stralman-like prize that EDM gave up too soon on.

Hunwick's injury may have been the biggest blessing in disguise this season. If Marincin kept getting bottom pair minutes it wouldn't have surprised me at all if the Leafs dumped him in the offseason to make room for one of the younger defencemen. Or at the very least it'll hopefully convince Babcock to continue using Marincin instead of Hunwick in that spot next season (assuming no other upgrades).

Actually, I kind of assumed he'd be here next season given he'll only be RFA and it wasn't like anyone on the Marlies was really busting down the door to line up for our blueline. He'll still be cheap because of his production stats and lack of highlight level play, but effective because of his crazy reach and deceptively efficient skating.

Which defensemen are still waiver exempt next season?

According to Capfriendly Carrick, Harrington, and Percy will all be subject to waivers next season. And I wouldn't have placed money or anything on Marincin being dealt, I just don't think his place in the organization was exactly rock solid. If for instance the Leafs wanted to a) keep Hunwick and b) bring in another veteran to replace Polak and c) give Harrington and/or Percy a solid chance to make the team then he might have been squeezed out.

Marincin probably would've made it through waivers next year if he kept getting third pairing minutes. The way they've been talking about him lately, it sounds like they're investing in a keeper.

I think Corrado and Carrick have the leg up on Percy and Harrington next year. Handedness as well as their wheels.

17. We?re going to get interesting insight into the way the Toronto Maple Leafs organization really thinks, and the test case is going to be Martin Marincin. Marincin is playing very well as the season progresses, getting more minutes almost by attrition. He has, for a few years now, been highly regarded by the analytics community and Toronto?s assembled a bright staff of these thinkers.

Last year, there was no doubt they had influence. When Lou Lamoriello and Mike Babcock arrived, the feeling was that influence would decrease, by a large margin. Marincin is not a points producer. He?s not overly physical. He defends well. I?m very curious to see how much Babcock/Lamoriello value him at contract time and as the organization grows in talent.
