Hurricanes sign Semin (1 year, 7M)

Good signing...especially since it's only 1 year, so no strings attached.

I know there's the worry that some nights he's only flying at half-mast, however, with Staal and Skinner, I imagine Semin will be all over the ice.

Very interested to see what happens with Semin next year.

Both Ovechkin and Semin have been on the decline in Washington. Not sure if there was poison in the water there.

Am I the only one that wouldn't have signed this guy to that money? I realize it's only one year, but wasn't there a reason he didn't sign on July 1st? I thought he would come in a lot lower on salary...

Sigh, I know he's had a bad rap, but for a 1yr deal, I wouldn't have minded signing him.  Where would he play?  Probably 2nd line but then that just removes a spot for a rookie or prospect, I know.  But his production is hard to deny.  Maybe he doesn't work out for Carolina and that'll make me feel better.

How would you be able to tell?

Forget it, never mind, that was another thread.

He wanted more term than GM's were willing to give.

Crap.... Another Eastern team likely to be better than we are.  :-\

I don't think there was much doubt they were better than the Leafs before this signing.

Tough to say. Gun to my head, I'd have gone with the 'Canes too. Now I don't need the gun.

I think the Canes could possibly be contenders this year. Although, do they have any semblence of defense?

They have some decent offensive D but a number of them are pretty young.

As for Semin, he's not a guy I wanted.

For them its a great signing.  Yeah we would have had to trade a winger or two to be able to sign him.

Heard he only shows up for half the games.  Might work if the league lock-outs the players for half the season.

So far so good for the Canes. I guess also Semin must feel happy, most probably he would not have 28pts in 26 games in Washington. If he stays above point-per-game production, it would be interesting what would be next for him. Do the Canes extend him (do they have enough money to lock him long term), would he test free market? Honestly, I am quite surprised he does this well.

On related note - would similar change of scenery help Ovechkin?

I don't know why anyone would be surprised, he's always been very good.  His stats have always been very good.  You can see they took a bit of a dive his last couple of seasons in Washington - but if you look at Ovechkin his dropped at the same time.  I'm guessing that's when the team changed from being that high-flying one to eventually the one it is now.
