Idiocracy 2024

my FB and twitter timelines are full of 'what a great man' Charlie Kirk was. And tRump ordering flags at half staff to honour him.

Where was this show of respect and admiration when the two Minnesota Democrats were killed back in June?

the double standard is appalling.
I've had the exact same experience, which really is disappointing.

I mean it can be both. I do agree there is a new gilded age in the States, which I think now may be worse than the Rockefeller era, and wealth inequality needs to be addressed, but toning down the rhetoric really can't hurt, and stoking that fire can only lead to worse outcomes, especially when a large part of the motivation isn't just economic but is also cultural.
I don't think the motivation is economic, just that the ultimate causes are. You get the culture that your material and political conditions give you.

If you are wealthy and powerful and you helped us along into the War on Terror or 08 Crash, you won't suffer any consequences whatsoever, but if you live as a mere mortal in the US there are plenty of ways you can be bankrupted, maimed, or killed. No matter how many folks vote to throw the bums out, 70/30 issues that would give the wealthy a haircut (e.g. minimum wage hike) don't have a chance of passing whereas 30/70 issues that really only the wealthy support (e.g. Trump tax cuts) do.

If that's public life in your country, faith in change through normal democratic processes will erode, magical thinking and conspiracies will spread, and extreme acts will become more attractive to more people.

But also maybe it was a hit...?
