Should the old man have known that confronting the police the way he did have a high risk of injury to himself? .... "Old people are brittle. Don't push them. End of story." Very close minded. Don't push them at all?

I find this to be a really surprising reaction.

Why should the man have thought he was at risk?  It makes no sense to me.

I?d say ? don?t push anyone at all.

I don?t think I?ve ever pushed anyone walking down the street ever in my life.  Sometimes people get in your way. The appropriate reaction is to give way and walk around. Why should anyone, let alone the police, who should be held to a higher standard, be pushing anyone in such a situation?

It's not over yet, but in summary so far:

BLM: The police are brutalizing black people! We will exercise our 1st Amendment rights to peacefully demonstrate and repudiate this behaviour. We demand justice for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and the many others who have fallen victim to a cruel and unjust system.

Police Across the US: What, that is an outrageous lie. How dare you. May you enjoy these rubber bullets and riot shields to the face and tear gas in confined spaces.

BLM: Please stop killing us.
Media: tut tut, these rioters and looters should be ashamed of themselves

Police: You too, fake news folks, pew pew pew.

BLM: Defund the police.
Media: looting is just not nice

Police: Hey we're cool. See, kneeling and macarena? But also, have more (expired) tear gas and bean bags to the head. Also you, old white guy who was... handing back one of our helmets.

Media: Oh my goodness, did you see what the police did to that poor man

Should the old man have known that confronting the police the way he did have a high risk of injury to himself? Why are you only holding one side accountable? You expect the police to know better but not a 75 year old man? Does he not know how brittle he is? Why is he blocking their path in the first place? Does he have the right to do that?

The officer will have to justify his use of force and if he can't he will face the consequences. The act of the shove itself is nothing new or unexpected. You seem to think I'm saying the whole thing was justified. I'm not. I think the response was appropriate. I've made no mention of the force used.

My evaluation of your statement is that you cannot remove yourself from your own preconceptions and evaluate the situation objectively. "Old people are brittle. Don't push them. End of story." Very close minded. Don't push them at all? Or don't push them with excessive force? They're two different things. The 2nd one applies to everyone. Don't push ANYONE with excessive force. That's where I sit.

And in regards to Floyd George, my position is don't put your knee on ANYONE'S neck. Don't suffocate ANYONE to death. It doesn't matter to me that he was black. He was a human being who did not deserve that fate. I'm not trying to seperate him or make him a martyr for a cause. I just saw a person being murdered and it was horrible.

Are you unable to understand the simple concept that the adjective "excessive" is context-specific? The force required to be used to subdue a 200 lb professional athlete and an average 75-year old person is significantly different, right?

On another note, might I suggest you research why "all lives matter" is inappropriate? It just might illuminate why people are taking issue with your comments.

Yes, I do understand that.

If you think I'm dismissing the grievances of the black community, you're sadly mistaken. I'm suggesting that as long as we keep defining ourselves by our differences nothing is going to change. I would think that the incident in Buffalo would have highlighted for you that the issues of brutality by Police are not unique to any one group. This is not a race to the bottom. We need to find solutions that incorporate EVERYONE equally and in my opinion the first step towards that is to start viewing everyone equally, in ALL respects.

I don't think anyone can disagree with that sentiment. That's what we all want. But, it's not the current reality and we must deal with the current reality.

While you're correct that these issues don't belong solely to black people or LGBTQ2S people alone, it is these groups (and others) that disproportionately experience these issues. And more importantly to the issue that arises from the death of George Floyd is the fact that these issues are not just the cause of an ignorant, racist few. It's the result of systemic racism. This is where the change needs to happen. And this change will only happen by the spirit raised through the Black Lives Matter and Pride celebrations.

So yes, we do need to find solutions that help everyone; but while doing so, we must put the appropriate emphasis on helping and supporting the GROUPS that are disproportionately disadvantaged. The first step is recognizing and admitting to the truth that certain groups are disproportionately disadvantaged.

Officers did a great job protecting... the guy that drove his car through a barricade into a crowd of protesters and then shot the guy who was trying to stop him?

"Oh, alright, I guess we'll... you know... arrest you, I suppose."

This twitter thread really needs to be read by anyone who thinks that the best way to achieve things are via "non-violent" protests

Trump described the 75 year old as an "ANTIFA provocateur*" who "was pushed away after appearing to scan police communcations in order to black out the equipement". He also said the man "fell harder than he was pushed" and asked if it could be a "set up".

*French for: "Person who provokes, incites violence."

In 2016 I used to think all Trump supporters were either bad people or just dumb. Anyone still supporting this is both.

At this point, yeah, they're either so brain-washed by Faux News, OANN, Breitbart, etc., or they're crazy conspiracy nuts that it's to not agree with your sentiments. In 2016, I could have forgiven some of them for thinking he'd soften his stance once elected - as most political figures do. Now, after more than 3 years in office? This is who he is, and supporting him now is supporting bigotry, ignorance, hatred, and division.
