Idiocracy

I can't think of a male in power or with celebrity status right now, where if a story broke I wouldn't be like "Wow, that just floors me".  Maybe Brad Pitt?  Maybe Tom Hanks?

I'd genuinely be surprised to hear this about Trudeau or Obama.

True, I would probably feel the same way if something came out about them.  I guess I was more focused on people in entertainment rather than political figures.

Sure, but in the same way, I'd be pretty surprised to hear something like this about Steven Spielberg or Ron Howard.

How about Stallone?

Not so much, no. He's had some minor run-ins with the law (specifically being caught with a large amount of HGH). He'd fall into the not surprised but also not "of course he did" range.

Oof, Al Franken. Come on, buddy.

I want to be surprised, but, as intelligent as he is, he's never seemed like the greatest of humans.

I'm not making this statement in support of Franken but I hope people take a bit more of a step back before we execute every single person who is accused at this time.  False accusations are going to happen.  Some stuff is going to be abundantly clear but there are going to be some innocent people who could get swept up in this and hopefully we don't see too many people torn down who don't deserve it.

The biggest problem I have seen thus far is there is a lot of finger pointing and not really anything being done to actually change the culture around these events.

I get what you're saying and with the political culture in the US as ugly as it is you could easily see someone unscrupulous trying to take advantage of it(as someone astutely put it, Democrats would have been more inclined to believe Clinton was a sexual harasser if there wasn't also an organized movement trying to convince people he and his wife were muderers to boot).

But I think we're still miles away from that becoming a pressing concern. With Moore we're talking about multiple accusers being backed by dozens of corroborating witnesses. With Franken there's an actual photo. We're not seeing a witchhunt where a single accusation is bringing anyone down. Our standards are so low that it's practically taking actual smoking guns for anything to happen.

If there were one woman saying one unsubstantiated thing about a man who denied it...I'm not convinced the pendulum has swung so far that the accuser would be believed by people automatically.

I guess what got my tinfoil hat out of the closet on this one was that the woman has some ties to Hannity and Friends.  Whether there was a bit of an underlying agenda in coming out is something that isn't sitting right.  The photo is clearly inappropriate behaviour and Franken was in the SNL era of rampant cocaine and other drugs so I have no doubt that he and many others would have been doing more than their fair share of inappropriate behaviour.

I don't dispute his inappropriate behaviour, but it's clearly become more of a false equivalency kind of story to try and take some of the edge off a guy running around as a predator.  The focus on these things should really be about outing and stopping bad/criminal behaviour, not identifying as many Republicans/Democrats who are committing these acts.

What I will give Franken credit for is being a much more vocal voice for women's rights, at the very least since he has come into office.  That's something that you can't really dispute.  It doesn't absolve inappropriate behaviour in the past, but hopefully this doesn't become something that muddies future ability to continue to make positive changes to society.

This is after Trump essentially demanded that the kids thank him for what he did (which they did).

It only took Zimbabwe 37 years to impeach their dictator (all be it after a "this is not a coup" coup). And he resigned before the impeachment was completed.

Maybe there's hope for the USA yet.

I'm not holding my breath for, what seems to me, a military coup.

UCLA basketball players Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were released from detention on shoplifting charges. The three thanked Trump during a news conference after their release but Ball's father - LaVar - played down the President's involvement.

On Wednesday Trump tweeted: "It wasn't the White House, it wasn't the State Department, it wasn't father LaVar's so-called people on the ground in China that got his son out of a long term prison sentence - IT WAS ME. Too bad! LaVar is just a poor man's version of Don King, but without the hair.

"Just think LaVar, you could have spent the next 5 to 10 years during Thanksgiving with your son in China, but no NBA contract to support you. But remember LaVar, shoplifting is NOT a little thing. It's a really big deal, especially in China. Ungrateful fool!"

What a delightful man.

So it's ok to make flat out racist Pocahontas jokes now apparently too.
