Iginla Traded to Pittsburgh

It's been talked about all night, but Aaron Ward finally says that it's a done deal.

It's expected that Calgary sends Iginla to Boston for Matt Bartkowski, Alex Khokhlachev and a 1st round pick

UPDATE:

As noted, his destination is actually Pittsburgh:

Penguins acquire F Jarome Iginla from Flames for F Kenneth Agostino, F Ben Hanowski and a 2013 1st round pick.

These kind of moves have been made for years but it seems it rarely works as good as most anticipate.  Even the Ray Bourque deal took another year....

Any comments on the two heading to Calgary? Never heard of either

A lot of Boston fans consider Khokhlachev their top prospect. Put up big numbers in the OHL a couple years back, utilizing creativity and a quick release on offense.

Bartowski on the other hand doesn't look to be developing. Probably a depth defender at best.

Flames fans can't be happy with the return.

Khokhlachev aka "Koko" played junior for the Windsor Spitfires and put up pretty decent numbers. He could be a good rebuilding piece for the Flames.

I believe the 1st round pick in the deal is conditional on Iginla re-signing with Boston rather than just being a rental player for them.

wtf is going on? hearing Iginla to Pittsburgh now???

The Flames sent Iginla to Pittsburgh for first rounder and college prospects Kenneth Agostino (Yal) and Ben Hanowski (St. Cloud State).

??????????????????????????????

That's what I've got but also with a first round pick in 2013.

Trade to Pittsburgh for the package mentioned (including the first) announced at 2.30am (about 90 mins ago here). Iginla's choice to go to Pittsburgh instead of Boston.

Just going through the time line now and man, what a strange series of events. Good for Pittsburgh... Can't say I feel bead for Boston at all.  :P

Edit: Though I do feel bad for Calgary fans. It's believed the Flames preferred Boston's offer and without knowing much about the prospects involved, it seems a pretty light return for Iginla.

It seems like the two narratives out there on this deal is that it wasn't much of a return but that Iginla might not be the player he used to be so...it seems to line up pretty well.

Any chance Iginla re-signs for Calgary this summer and plays out the rest of his career there?

There could be, I suppose, but it strikes me as relatively unlikely. Unless the Flames don't actually plan on rebuilding or Iginla establishes he's got absolutely nothing left there'd be nothing fundamentally different about his situation next year come the deadline than there is this year and I doubt he'd want to go through this again.

Hard to imagine Calgary doesn't make the difficult decision of dealing a guy who's been the face of the franchise for a dozen years without really deciding that they're going in another direction.

Probably not, at least if we believe what Feaster said on NHL.com. It would seem that Iginla didn't want to sign an extension so the Flames were forced to deal him in order to get at least some sort of return. He had only 4 teams on his list and the Flames didn't want to move him to a Western Conference team so it was between Boston and Pittsburgh. Boston's offer was better but Iginla's own preference was the Pens so Feaster honored his will and traded him there.

What a strange turn of events.

Pittsburgh is loaded to the hilt though. Morrow and Iginla may not be what they once were but they've just acquired two NHL captains in a week.

Iginla might not be the player that he once was, but he still has 22 points in 31 games on a really crappy team.  Stick him on Pittsburgh's loaded roster and I'm sure his production will improve a bit.
