Implications of the Trade Deadline on the Leafs Playoff Chances

I don't think that the Leafs needed to make a deal, or even that a good deal was out there, but realistically they have to face that just about everyone they're fighting for a playoff spot improved and in some cases added a pretty significant piece.

Agreed. The proper response would be for Carlyle to adopt a more aggressive defensive system, playing to the team's strengths of speed.  If they did that they'd improve enough from within to stay in the hunt.

I appreciate that's the theory du jour but even then with talent winning out, just about everyone the Leafs are fighting for a playoff spot with/will play in the playoffs got a little tougher. Changing up styles might get the team to a playoff spot but even then they'd be pretty heavy underdogs.

It's not the theory du jour.  It's the theory that has applied to every jour since the start of the saison.

I mean, I can't speak for you but I certainly have heard other theories this year that would quickly and simply right the ship.

Let's list them.  I'll start:

1.  Carlyle sucks.
2.  Carlyle is a stubborn mule.
3.  Carlyle can't coach.

You take it from here.

Those aren't really theories but, heck, certainly is a novel approach for Leafs fans to blame the coach for the team's failings.

If the Canadiens got Vanek for a 2nd rounder and a pick, I am not sure why the Leafs couldn't have offered something similar.  Maybe having 4 million invested in Clarkson had something to do with that, but Vanek would have looked sweet in blue and white.

I knew other teams would improve because of the trades they made, but I also thought the Leafs would be competing for 2nd or 3rd in the Atlantic. Right now they suck and so does Carlyle.

Because the Leafs had very little in terms of cap space.  Bolland was on the LTIR, so we could have sent Ashton/Holland down and traded for someone with Bolland sized salary.  But as soon as Bolland returned, we'd have a cap problem.  So, the only way to get a player like Vanek would be to package up some players that have an equivalent salary... so Gleason and Kulemin plus picks (because who really wants Gleason at 4 million for the next couple of seasons).  I don't think that makes our team better.
