Is It Okay to Hope for a High Draft Pick?

..but it's fun to play the 'what if' Rask-universe question.. maybe Walter Bishop could help with a reset.

So many time travel paradoxes . . . my head is exploderating.

I think it ends with Sundin's baby saving the Leafs and a cup in 2015...

With the new lottery system the Tank Nation is obsolete. You may get No. 1 pick while being just a single point shy off the play-offs.

In all likelihood, that is the best we can hope for this year. This team is better than a bottom 5 finish, and not good enough to make the dance.

True, but, the lower you finish, the stronger your odds.

It's still a weighted lottery. Just missing the playoffs means you have a chance at first overall, but just a very slim chance. All non-playoff teams have always had a chance of winning the lottery, just now they can move all the way up to 1st, rather than just 4 (or 5?) spots.

further to Busta's comment:

Chance of winning NHL Lottery
25.0% - 30th
18.8% - 29th
14.2% - 28th
10.7% - 27th
8.1% - 26th
6.2% - 25th
4.7% - 24th
3.6% - 23rd
2.7% - 22nd
2.1% - 21st
1.5% - 20th
1.1% - 19th
0.8% - 18th
0.5% - 17th

If 17th place wins (1 in 200 shot - very slim chance), all the other teams now slide down one position. (instead of maximum move up of 4 places in the draft)

Sure, how about the Leafs 7 years old streak of non-playoffs appearances. Does it play in our favour, or not? I was under the impression that it has a certain weight in balloting. If so, we do not have to necessarily tank. Or is my understanding of the weighted balloting wrong?

Past history only counted when there was a lottery draft after a lost season. Since there's a season this year, the draft will be based on this year's finish.

If the Leafs aren't going to make the playoffs this year, I hope they bomb out spectacularly. I'm used to that now. If they miss by 1 or 2 points, I'll be crushed.

I was hoping/thought (I guess mistakenly) the lottery would be used to determine all picks from 1 to 14 as opposed to just the 1st pick and everyone slides down.

Oh, I see. My mistake. Anyway, I am sick of tanking. This is what we have done for almost a decade. I believe it?s a time to sneak into the playoffs and contrary to Burkie I believe should the Leafs be good enough to make the playoffs, I do not see their asses kicked in the first round. Sure, they may be defeated, but they can fight a respectable battle.

The Leafs should concentrate on making playoffs rather than on tanking for two reasons. First is that the players need to start gaining some playoffs experience, otherwise they will hardly ever be able to walk all the way. Secondly making the playoffs is key factor in attracting major free agents we all have in mind.
