Is Nonis good enough?

How will the defence shake out next year?

Rielly, Gardiner, Ranger, Franson, Gunnarson, Phaneuf, Fraser, Holzer, Liles, Kostka, Komisarek

That's 4 or 5 too many NHL calibre defenseman.

At a guess? Komisarek is bought out, Rielly doesn't make the team, Kostka is back in the AHL, Ranger...I have no idea if he's really in the conversation and then you're back to a fairly manageable number.

I really don't see Kostka being sent back down, unless his play starts to drastically diminish. He appears to be one of Carlyle's favorites.

Considering only Phaneuf is the only dman (of the current top six) under contract next year.  There is no guarantee all of the imcumbents will be back in 2013-14

Outside of Liles & Connolly, I don't see any other vets moving at this point.  Leafs are in the playoffs right now and having veterans around isn't a bad thing.

I think if they can free themselves of Liles, they will go for it.  Other than that, not seeing the fire sale happening.

MacArthur may have to be moved. If everyone is healthy, there really isn't a spot for him anymore.

How good does that rumoured 1st rounder offered for him last year look right about now...

Komi  will get us a return as well.

No, he won't. That contract of his negates whatever marginal on-ice value he provides. Nobody wants a $4.5M bottom pairing defenceman.

He's an amnesty buy out in the summer.  nothing more.

You'd think at some point he'd waive the NMC, and ask to be sent down to get some game time.

At least he could muster up some kind of progress to his game and be better able to get a contract this summer...after, of course, the obvious Leaf buyout.

kevin allen of USA today is tweeting that the hurricanes are expected to deal for a veteran d-man in the next few days.

Liles? can't see it being komi...but Gunner maybe?

the other guys wouldn't be considered vets would they?

Nonis is more than good enough and is surrounded by some of the best hockey minds in the business...all assembled by Burke of course. Nonis was going to take over from Burke anyway in the long term..just shorter than we anticipated.

Having a good team has got to be making it nice for Nonis moving towards the trade deadline a month from now.

I don't think anyone is expecting Nonis to pull off a magical blockbuster deal that makes the Leafs a contender but some tweaking before the deadline would be fun. Maybe that "2 dimes and a nickel for a quarter" type trade ?
