markhmasters: Despite all the angst surrounding Toronto's 5th straight loss, Leafs actually moved up in the standings tonight (7th to 6th)

Wonder if the Leafs can continue to move up in the standings if they lost the next 5 in a row?  Bizzaro hockey league?

To be clear, they were 5th when they started this 5 game losing streak, so they dropped a spot in the standings since the slide.

Yeah I know. I was pointing out the absurdity of Mark Masters putting a positive spin on a 5 game win less skid.

There was no "spin," he stated a fact.

Sure it's a fact but the way he said it "despite the angst" implies Leafs fans shouldn't be so down on the team. Winless in 5 - no worries they moved up a spot in the standings!

So?  When things are good, negative things are still pointed out.  Looking for a little too much in that comment, I think.

Horshack OOH, OOH
Mr. Kotter Yes, Arnold?

Horshack Its a dead cat bounce!

The Leafs come out of a 5 game slump to earn 5 out of their last possible 6 points, including a win over Boston.  That feels new.

Chara was afraid that Sundin might play, he started to have meltdown flashbacks to remember his Sens years...

But a win is a win, even with 13 shots for...

The 13 shots were  for matts, we gave him the win on 13 shots for #13. ;D

Leafs win on their lowest shot total this season -- proof that the smarter team won here.  Take that Boston!

Regrettably, I think the only thing that it proves was the Reimer had a good game and Boston's  decision to play Khudobin was a poor one. It probably also demonstrates that puck possession was not as one-sided as the shot totals indicate.

Unless, of course, you subscribe to the theory that Boston would much rather be seeded 4th than 1st or 2nd place and avoid any potential of playing New Jersey with Brodeur betwixt the pipes in the 1st round. If so, the B's were quite content to drop the game to Toronto and the decision to play Khudobin was a cunning one.

If we beat Boston at home on Monday with Rask in the pipes? Different story. But we ain't there yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still very happy with the victory and we sure as hell need the points to retain 6th (or any playoff position).

Teams find different ways to win during the season. The Leafs are full marks for their place in the standings this year. No smoke and mirrors. I think Leaf fans have been through so much adversity that there is a feeling the bus is going over the cliff at any point. Chicago, Detroit and Pittsburgh will win like the Leafs did last night at some point. No need to think that the Leafs were somehow lucky to win. They did enough things right to win the game. Enjoy it. This team is only going to get better.    8)

You have to give credit to Boston for being that much better than the Leafs, but as was mentioned above, the puck possession wasn't as woefully lopsided last night as its been in the past. The Leafs were able to mount some sustained pressure, and they got in on the forecheck better than I've seen them do since they beat Montreal 6-0. It wasn't much but it's more than they ever have in the past eight losses to the Bruins. They played acceptable defensively but still turned the puck over way more than they should if they want to be considered a good team. That said, they were still extremely opportunistic and that won't fly over the long term against anybody, let alone the Bruins.

The Leafs have the offensive talent to be successful with the opportunities that present themselves, but they can't simply rely on unforced errors and expect any kind of sustained success.

If you look at Pittsburgh, for example, they aren't a good defensive team. In fact, they are a bad defensive team. Nothing made that more apparent than last years dreadful playoff performance when Fleury's horrible play didn't cover up for their complete inability to play defence. The reason Pittsburgh is so successful is because they control the puck, and therefore dictate how the opposition is going to play. They generate offence, the Leafs don't. The Leafs simply use their offensive talent to take advantage of mistakes and capitalize. Make no mistake, I think the Leafs are one of the most talented teams in the league, based on pure skill. That said, they don't GENERATE offensive chances, but merely capitalize on mistakes at an alarmingly (for the opposition) high rate. This is not sustainable over the long term, and certainly won't fly in the playoffs.

Basically what I'm saying is, I don't believe the Leafs will make the playoffs this year. They have some of the right pieces, but they still lack the ability to dictate the play, something that those teams of the early 2000s were able to do.

Not bad 3 out of 4pts against Boston. this team is looking more and more like it is ready to play with the big boys. I think next season we will be a top contender, top ten I would say.

I'll be happy just seeing them get in this season and give the team a taste of things to come.

I think 3 of 4 pts vs. Boston is possibly a season saving feat by this team.  If they had gotten 0 of 4 points which I think was probably likely based on history, they would sit with 35 pts and be in 7th place with NYR only 2 pts behind and 2 games in hand and Carolina 3 points behind with 3 games in hand.

Now as long as they don't blow it vs. the weaker opponents coming up tonight and over the next few weeks, these points vs. Boston could be the difference.
