Islanders @ Leafs - Nov. 19th, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

Im really liking this Holland kid...looks pretty comfortable on the first line and I didn't see any glaring errors. I like potential.

Is it just me or does has Kessel looked pale I'm the face tonight.

After his first goal looked like he just wanted to go sit down.

They say sometimes guys have their best games when they are under the weather, which he probably still is.

Left practice early yesterday with the flu.  Probably still not 100%.

Alright who's ordering their Kessel jersey?  Me first.

I know you meant best defensive forward ... now, is he that?  You say no.  I wonder though if your perception is correct though.  I guess it's hard to measure how often somebody should clear the zone ... is there an advanced stat for that?

Yeah sorry that's what I meant. Some people/teams track zone entries and clearing attempts but it's not really something that easily accessible. Somebody just has to manually keep track of them as they happen.

I think if you keep an eye out for it you'll see what I mean with McClement though. He's great on the PK because he can win puck battles and get rid of the puck quickly and efficiently. Most, if not all of those puck battles are occurring either along the boards or high up around the points. He wins the battle and fires the puck down the ice. At even strength though those aren't really the areas where he generally plays. As a centre he's usually playing more down low or in the middle of the ice. He can't use the boards to his advantage as much as he does on the PK. And as a centre at even strength it's partly his responsibility to start break out plays. He either has to skate the puck out of the zone or make a pass to his wingers. He's not really the best skater or puck handler so option one usually isn't taken. Option two isn't always available because of how down low the wingers play so often he just tries to fire the puck across the blue line and it's either caught by the defencemen or it just barely gets out but the opposing team is still in possession of it.

That's why I would much rather have him play the wing on the 3rd line if injuries force him to play in the top-9 at all. Like when he played with Grabovski on the checking unit last season when injuries hit. He just seemed much more effective there. He can win those one-on-one battles along the boards and then use the boards to chip the puck out of the zone and give chase.

I also think McLement can fill in on either if the top 2 lines if need be and not look out of place.  He'd most likely be on the wing in this case as we'll.

Smithson was 13/16 on faceoffs, including 9/10 in the defensive zone.

The teams overall faceoff winning percentage before Smithson was signed was 45%. In the 6 games he's played in we've won 53% of the draws.

Good analysis there, I'll watch him more closely at ES next time.

And I'd have no problem putting him to the wing once Kadri & Bozak are back.  Let him bump MacLaren.  Makes more room for Smtihson / Smith / Holland.

Just watched some post-game interviews. Somebody asked Kessel why his wrist was taped up tonight and he looked a little awkward and said that he didn't want to talk about it. I wonder if he's been battling a minor injury the last little while.

Too much PS4.

Good win tonight.  All lines played well, particularly the Lupul/Smith/Clarkson trio.  Happy for #71 on making more of an impact.  Good job.

As an Isles fan, too, I'm disappointed with the team's record so far.  They need to tighten up on the back-end if they hope to have any chances at improving their game.  (*sigh*) This team is frustrating!

PVR'd it, what shots by Kessel and Clarkson.

I just caught the highlights, but this was my exact thought as well.  Pretty nice way for Clarkson to get his 1st goal as a Leaf with a wicked shot.

I liked Clarkson's game all night.  I actually noticed him out there controlling the boards while cycling the puck, and he had a huge bodycheck on an Islander who tried to hit him, the poor soul went flying and Clarkson didn't even look affected.

Got one for my 5 yr old for Christmas!  He loves Kessel and when he does take a minute to watch the game (as he's just tooooo busy running around :) ), he only wants to watch Kessel. He says "mommy, see, I skate fast just like Kessel"  ;D. Too adorable.
