Islanders vs. Maple Leafs - Jan. 2nd, 7:30pm - SN, Fan 590

Good that they won, but they shouldn't have to struggle so much against crappy teams.

I do give the coaches credit for letting Marner stay out on PP2 — paid instant dividends. Willy wasn't doing anything.
88 hasn't done much staying on with PP2. I get why they do it but would rather even see the Domi line out there especially when they were so hot. They def need to change up PP1 tho. OEL at the very least.

McMann is now 2nd in the league in goals per 60 behind Ovechkin (15 or more games played)
He's on pace for 29 goals
He is 4th in goal scoring on his team behind Nylander, Tavares & Marner, 5th in ppg .55, 4th in gpg .38
He's 2nd in team plus minus behind Tanev
He's 2nd in takeaways/60 behind Marner
He's 6th in hits/60 (15 or more games played)
According to NHL Edge, he's 3rd fastest forward on the team.

His price performance with a $1.35Mil cap hit must be up there.

He's a goal scorer. Always was. Probably always will be.
He's pretty good at getting control of the puck.
And at 6'2" 215lbs, he'll go to the front of the net. That is his office.
He's not Auston Matthews and never will be but there are some characteristics of his game like Matthews when it comes to scoring goals - like the second goal on the PP tonight.
With the PP floundering without Matthews, it might be an idea to try him on the 1st PP.
He'll be probably be more productive than Knies.
He played very well with Tavares and Marner earlier this season.
He's far from the prettiest goal scorer I ever saw.
Doesn't have the slickest looking shot. But he seems to find a way.
What do they have to lose?
They need to shake it up.

Alas, OEL described in the post-game that he was just trying to shoot for a stick and there was a fortuitous bounce to McMann.

As expected, Nylander was pseudo-doodoo. Did not expect to see Marner down there either, but they were the two on the ice for the only goal against. Come to think of it, Marner did have two grade-A giveaways that Woll turned aside and didn't really drive anything 5v5.

Really helps having a third line that can score once in awhile!
