Just as an example, Iginla is on a 1-year deal with Boston right now that contains mostly performance bonuses. His base salary is $1.8mil but that can go up to $6mil if he hits certain marks. He earned $3.7mil by playing just 10 regular season games this season. If Boston gets to the 3rd round he earns another $250k and if they win the Cup it's another $250k. The cap hit for most, if not all, of those bonuses will be applied to Boston's cap next season because they will push Boston's cap this season over the limit.
