Jake Gardiner getting scratched

Agree....wouldn't read too much iinto this.  Wilson also sat out Schenn this season and no one was talking about sending him down.  Bigger things to be concerned about and that would be getting a big power forward for down the stretch......and/or just trying to make the playoff's..

mirtle: Brian Burke says on @FAN590 that Jake Gardiner will go to the minors if he's spending too much time in the press box.

Not a bad idea.  Sit him for a few games, if someone struggles, try him out again and see if he got fresher legs from a bit of a vacation.  If not, he'll be in the box and go to the Minors.  I don't mind that for now.

After a 3-0 loss to the New York Rangers last night, the Toronto Maple Leafs have sent down Jake Gardiner to the Toronto Marlies. With 37 games played for the Leafs this season, the 21 year old defenceman has 10 assists, 16 penalty minutes, and is a -1.

I completely understand he'll benefit from a key role with the Marlies. However, he's a much better option than Komisarek right now I think - especially with Liles out. As we chase down a playoff spot, we should be trying to putt the best men on the ice. My view is that Gardiner (even with the need for more seasoning) is the better guy.

I'm not sure I agree. In his last few weeks in the line-up, Gardiner did not look very good. He was giving the puck away a lot, blowing defensive assignments and not providing much by way of offence either. He was running out of gas, which, considering he's used to 40-ish game seasons in the NCAA isn't a surprise. Komisarek has his warts, no doubt, but, right now, an out of gas Gardiner is not a better option than him. The best thing for him right now is to go to the Marlies, bring up his endurance levels in a lower pressure environment and work on the defensive side of his game so he can be the defenceman we hope he can be for the future.

I'm not sure what the loss to the Rangers has to do with Gardiner being sent down. If we had won they would have kept him up? If they're not going to play him he should be getting serious ice time with the Marlies.

Nothing, other than him being scratched instead of playing may have been the reason he was sent down now.

Well said and I completely agree.  Gardiner needs the ice time.  We may seem in a few weeks once some d is traded off the blue line.  Why have him sit and not play though, how is that elevating his game.  Bring up Holzer to sit in the press box or another capable Marlie who doesn't figure into the future of the Leafs.

Komisarek wasn't great last night but neither was anyone else.  He hasn't been the problem per se.  We need Liles back more than Gardiner.  And in any case, Komi is not getting scratched in favor of a rookie.

Yes, it gets pretty tiresome alway pinning the blame on Komi doesn't it?

I've actually given Komisarek a fair bit of credit for being a fair bit better this year than last. My feeling though is that since the offence has completely dried up, it need a spark and there's no way we're going to get that from Komisarek.

Well the four game win streak hinged on a tighter defence which seemed to coincide with the more physical 6 we see out there now and Komi is one of them.  I liked what the Leafs had shown during that 4 game streak. I am not ready to make a rash decision after a bad luck loss in Buf or after being lulled to sleep in a back to back game against the number one team in the NHL.

I'm not sure the loss in Buffalo had much to do with bad luck but it's a fair point re. the Rangers. I think we really do miss Liles a ton. I hope he's back sooner rather than later. He's so composed and I think that has a steadying influence on the group.

I agree of all the injuries we have had this season, the loss of Liles hurt us the most, even with our depth on D.

I agree with Sarge here, Gardiner is the better option at this moment.  Komi isn't a dud but Gardiner is more offensively minded and we need that right now.  Oh and statistically Komi has been pretty week since his return, -5 and no points and he isn't exactly providing anything away from the stats.

Has he been recalled already?  I just checked the Marlies stats page and Gardiner is updated (1 game, 1 point) but he has a big "X" next to his name that indicates "not on active roster."  Just like Crabb, Kadri, Aulie, etc.

Perhaps.  The Marlies don't play again until Saturday so maybe the Leafs will want him back in anticipation of a trade this week (see I can stoke the fire too).  I think the Leafs roster had only 21 or 22 guys after they sent Gardiner down so there was still room for him to be called up.  Maybe he'll play again this week?

He's back.

That's funny.  They just sent him down to get a game in so he wouldn't have too much rust.  Hope he gets back in a game, I can't  handle seeing 2 slow d-men out there in the same game (Schenn and Komisarek)
