Game Notes
WPG
-Connor Hellebuyck (21-5-1, 2.15 GAA, .927 Sv%) will likely start for the Jets
-Winnipeg of course went on an incredible 15-1-0 start to the season. They've since gone 9-9-1 but still find themselves at the very top of the standings in the league
TOR
-Joseph Woll (9-5-0, 2.50 GAA, .912 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
-Toronto's lines could of course look different depending on if Matthews is in the line-up or not. I think most of us would expect him to sit another game so the question then becomes does Kampf remain in the top-6 or does the team try something different

Hallelujah for the next gen game and a “proper” 7pm faceoff.

I agree, sit Matthews until about 2 weeks before the playoffs if you have to.

The only way Matthews could play is if he could do no more damage - which is unlikely given how the cross check hurt him and rest would not do the injury any good - which defies most medical reasoning and their decisions earlier this season to keep him out.
It is hard to imagine a good situation for his uncompromised physical ability to play the game in the near future.
I've seen some speculation that he in fact hurt it late last season. Not sure how credible that is. If that is true ...

Hopefully, they'll give someone else Reaves 8 mins of ice time

What about calling up Minten to help fill in? (or are they restricted due to the roster freeze?)

I wouldn't be completely shocked if that was a possible hold up on a surgery option.
I have my doubts the injury is one where surgery is really even an option. Seems to me like a muscular issue with around his ribs/back, which would be more of a rest and let it heal situation more than anything else (though, that could mean a significant period of rest, physio, etc., before he should even set foot on the ice - and, by that, I mean 6-8 week or more). If it was something that required surgery in that area, I'm not sure he'd even be able to play - even at a less than his typical self level.

Minten pointless in his last 2 games, so maybe leave him alone, get through the holidays, the re-evaluate in January?

Some sort of issue with his back like the beginnings of a degenerative disk (for example) could explain it and why they didn't rush into surgery - exhausting the non-surgical options because of the risk surgery in that area presents. I don't know if there is any merit to that but this situation makes one wonder.

I'll take 8 pointless minutes of Minton over 8 minutes of Reaves who is fairly pointless no matter how one looks at him.
Again, the roster freeze is probably prohibitive.

You can still bring players up, just can't send them down (with some exceptions). Matthews would have to go on IR of course though to make room but that wouldn't be a problem.

Honestly maybe that cross check he took will be a wake up call. In comparison to other hits players take that cross check was a bit of a love tap. Matthews will take cross checks like that at least once a game in the playoffs (I mean he shouldn't but he does). If something like that is aggravating his injury to the point he can't play again then they really need to figure something else out here. And it's hard to imagine that being something that doesn't keep him out somewhat long-term right now.

Agreed - that it was far from the worst cross check.
Imagine a team is losing to him in the playoffs .... they're not going to make sure they nail him in that area?
There is a reason why teams do not specify details on injuries ... but they have a how-to video now ..
You have summarized my concern pretty well.
I do not have a good feeling about this. I doubt it is going away any time soon.

A small piece of me wonders if he's either a big long term surgery thing that takes him out for the whole year....or something that has a 3-ish month recovery time and doing surgery in December doesn't bring him back close enough to the playoffs to benefit from the 13M in cap space that a postseason addition of Mathews would provide.
