John Michael Liles - Carolina

anyone who wants to play Frazer over someone like Liles is an idiot. Sorry Randy but you have lost the thread and it is time for a change

Come on people, don't act like Liles wasn't the contract that most wanted the Leafs to buyout this off season.

Guilty as charged! However if Nonis would have done it when I suggested it, he would have had a few bucks around to fix "Carlyle's bottom 6" right now.

Bought out, not traded for another non-impact player with a larger contract.

Definitely, 100%, not the contract that I wanted bought out.

It would have made more sense to use the compliance buy out on him, let Komisarek's run out, and free up that space.  Especially if the coach wasn't going to use him.  If they weren't going to buy him out I'd rather have seen him playing, but now we have Gleason's slightly higher hit instead.

higher hit?.but lower buy out terms?.Rutherford gets a decent puck moving defenseman that RC cannot stand and we get a sack of potatoes that ultimately will cost us less

I'm not debating whether or not it would of been the right move to buy him out or trade him. I'm also not debating that keeping Komisarek would of been the right move or not.

I'm questioning those that are upset that Liles isn't on the team. People around here wrote Liles off last season.

I like Liles. I think he stills has gas in the tank. He was shoehorned into being a goat for a while and I don't think it was necessarily just.

You are right.  I did want Liles bought out over Komisarek.  But once that didn't happen, there was no reason to not play him.  As nice has Rielly has been this year, he looks like an overmatched rookie on a lot of nights.  His defensive game still needs a lot of work and he doesn't have the physical strength to win puck battles yet.  There was no need to rush him to the NHL over Liles once the decision was made to keep him.

There was no reason to keep him in the AHL when the team was struggling to provide offense and Fraser was hobbling up and down the ice.

There was no reason to trade him for a guy who was having a terrible season for a team that until recently was behind us in the standings.

Over a 6 game stretch (4 for Liles, 2 for Gleason) there is a net:

Carolina: 1G 0A 1P +8 +1 hits  +6 blocked shot
Toronto: 0G 0A 0P -8 -1 hits  -6 blocked shots

Hurricanes 2-0-0 since the trade.  They are up 1-0 early on Nashville tonight.  Liles doesn't have a point yet but he is +4 so far in the 2+ games.

They're also now within 2 points of the Leafs, and they hold the first tiebreaker.

And this is where i put a full stop.
