Jonathan Drouin requests trade

The Turris trade and perhaps the Niedereiter trade are possible comparables.

My memory might be wrong but wasn't Niedereiter a bit of a surprise pick at #5? Conversely, Drouin was in the #1 discussion in a strong draft year.

Niedereiter was traded for Cal Clutterbuck and a 3rd rounder. At the time I remember most people thinking that the Islanders lost that trade. Kyle Turris was traded for David Rundblad and a 2nd rounder. Rundblad was 2 years away from being a mid-1st rounder. I think the consensus was that was a pretty even trade.

Kapanen and a 2nd could be a decent comparable to that. Although if the Leafs decide to consider trading JVR that would probably do it.

Kapanen and a 2nd?

I think that is wishful thinking, especially given Kapanen has been somewhat underwhelming this season.

Kapanen and the conditional 1st from Pittsburgh for Drouin and a 3rd maybe?

Was just a comparable. As Nik mentioned, Drouin probably has a bit more value than a typical 3rd overall draft pick. And I'm pretty sure Turris was traded a 1 year later in his development. But, we've seen time and time again, when a player in this situation is traded the original team often loses. If the Leafs offered up JVR and Tampa wanted immediate help back in return I'd be pretty shocked if any other team could match that.

If I were a betting man I'd guess TB would want immediate help if they dealt Drouin. They're not going to get good prospect value.

Tampa is pretty close to the cap though, and they'd likely have to move money out along with Drouin to afford some substantial immediate help.

To NYI: Jonathan Drouin, Braydon Coburn
To Winnipeg: Travis Hamonic, Michael Dal Colle
To TB: Dustin Byfuglien

OK, but I don't see how the Leafs steal either Drouin or Stamkos in this deal.

That... actually makes a lot of sense for everyone (assuming Tampa can re-sign Buff).

Tampa gets so caught up in re-signing Byfuglien that they completely forget Stamkos is on the team. Then:

To Toronto: Stamkos, 1st round pick, Victor Hedman
To Tampa: Leo Komarov

Toronto gets a few comparably lesser players, Komarov work ethics Tampa to a Stanley Cup.

I could definitely see a deal with JvR and Drouin as the main pieces. I also wonder if the relationship between Shanahan and Yzerman could help grease the wheel, so to speak.

I'd even do it without the pick!!  Hell I'd probably be willing to throw in a pick of ours!!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that Nik was being facetious on this one...and maybe you are too... :o

I think you will go 2 for 2!!  But I'm still willing to make the deal.

That's more or less where I was going to go.

I'm impressed that you found a way to get Hedman in the deal mix there too...shows some guts/risk taking.

Hard pass on Stamkos/1st for Komarov. We're trying to win games here.

Wait, how many languages does Stamkos speak?

How fast can Stamkos drive in Finland and how open is he to paying $1.5 million in fines?

I agree though I think Tampa would have to add to that, how much I'm not sure but especially so if the Leafs are taking back a bad contract to balance things out.
