I am disappointed, but maybe even a little bit happy for Edmonton. Except our jokes about them are going to be half as relevant as they were yesterday.

Oh well, back to drinking.

I guess Melnyk couldn't convince Schultz to take a Stanley Cup Discount.

Media or not Busta..........the guy had the Anaheim Ducks interested in him and the Toronto Maple Leafs willing to trade a 2nd round pick just to negotiate something with him and he said.............nah, I'm gonna test the free agent market. Without ever playing an NHL game.

He didn't "test the market" in any meaningful way. He was going to get paid the exact same amount no matter who signed him. All he chose to do was hear pitches from various teams.

There's nothing he did that is in anyway outside of the norm for anyone who has other people interested in them. Nobody made these teams want to sign him.

As much as you might think he's in his rights to do that, it will still bug people. Sorry, but that's reality.

Well, it's not a question of "thinking" that it's in his rights. It's absolutely in his rights. It's written into the CBA. It's the same thing each and every hockey player gets to do if they want.

You may be right that people will get rubbed the wrong way by it but that's a very sad reality and one that really doesn't speak well to the people who it's true of. I don't know if it's jealousy or just never being in a similar situation where they've been in high demand but it's not particularly rational.

Those people are the owners.

This player kind of thumbed his nose at the establishment and right in the middle of CBA negotiations. The owners are going to demand a reduction to the salary cap and having a precedent setting, very well conducted circumvention of the draft system probably isn't softening their stance any.

Well, there's a few things wrong there. For starters, this sets absolutely no precedent that Blake Wheeler didn't already establish. Along those lines, this is in no way a circumvention of the draft system but a part of the draft system that exists in every single sport.

Also, I doubt that "The Owners" Are going to feel any specific way about this. I'd imagine the owners of Edmonton and Boston, among others, are going to have slightly different perspectives on the matter than those in Anaheim or Phoenix.

The owners are going to want to take a cut of the player's take either way. They can't do anything about players having the right to not sign with the team that drafts them outside of offering compensation to the team that loses a player. I really don't see how this impacts the CBA negotiations at all.

Yeah, again, I don't see why owners would just feel as if anything happened that was new or informed them of something they didn't know. Blake Wheeler did the exact same thing and he was the #5 overall pick.

But we're sort of talking about two entirely separate issues. There's the issue of the Cap, which Schultz has nothing to do with, and the issue of draft rights, which they can't really do anything about.
