Kadri signs 1-year extension

not really sure how he earned the raise as his previous contract of 2.9million per year was signed coming of a season with 44 pts in 48 games (.92ppg).

Now he is coming of a season of 39 pts in 73 games (.53ppg) and awarded 4.1 mil?

If kadri has off ice issues like Kessel then why did they sign him?

Uh, what off ice issues are those? Also, 1 year 4 mil is not really close to 7 years 8 mil.

He's not a 3rd liner.  He isn't played like a third liner and he doesn't produce like a third liner.

Mirtle just tweeted this:

His defensive play leaves a lot to be desired, but his production is definitely on the border between 1st and 2nd liner.

That goes with my recollection, though I thought he improved his defensive play overall.

He was sheltered that year and he's been asked to do more and play full seasons after that against better players.

I feel the need to draw everyone's attention to the fact that the symbol for "Impact on Linemates Corsi" is what appears to be a gentleman's moustache.

Because he was coming off his ELC and that was a shortened season.  This is nowhere near an overpayment.

I resent that remark. That could very well be a rogue's moustache.

Yeah I guess relative to Clarkson, Phaneuf and Kessel contracts, this is a bargain.  I suppose I'm a little cynical because it seems like it's been a while that I could look at one of our top players contracts and say 'wow, that's good value for that player'.  Van Riemsdyk might be the only one in that category.

JVR was a huge liability this past season. Probably the worst defensive forward on a team full of them, with nowhere near the production to compensate (particularly given his ice-time and PP opportunities). I don't doubt that he'll be better in a new situation but he's far from the first person who comes to mind when I think of good value contracts. The best example of that on the leafs might even be Kadri.

Kadri has always reminded me of Tony Tanti, you really don't see him but out of the blue he ends up with a goal or some offensive stat yet when he got it you can hardly remember him even being on the ice. For me it looked that Kadri couldn't pass the puck, every pass seemed to hit the opposition's stick or skate, it was a horrible year for him and us.

Kadri promised he was going to dedicate himself to being a more complete player which was mentioned over and over again on every televised Leaf game and it even appeared to be somewhat true earlier in the year but I think enthusiasm for his supposed reinvented self soon waned, whether or not he was a better player defensively I guess could be debated but we do know his offensive stats dipped considerably. Kadri I'm pretty sure figures his path to riches and glory is paved by his offensive accomplishments or more precisely his stats. Someone needs to show him that his possession ability is what should ensure him the glory he so desperately desires, I'd love to see him on the TV screen more because that's usually where the puck is, during most of his shifts I'm rarely aware of what he's doing so if he's ever to be a legitimate 1st or 2nd line center option he needs to be far more of an impact player.

We've heard in the past Kadri has had conditioning issues and also skating issues, the skating issues surprised me, so I assume the problems are still issues that need to be addressed before he can possibly become the player so many want him to be, I'm expecting Kadri and Babcock are going to have a very interesting season and we'll be hearing all about it.

IMHO, this is a show me season for Kadri.

If he fails to impress, he's gone at the trade deadline.  Just my opinion.  My opinion may not be anywhere near the truth, however.

Also, here's a pretty impressive clip he posted to his instagram account:

Thanks for posting this.

I've always thought that Kadri's skills and ambition exceeded what his body allowed him to do at the time. Hopefully the new commitment to strength and fitness will let him be the player he believes himself to be.

And he believes himself to be VERY good.

Nothing wrong with that. You need supreme self confidence to be a superstar. And while I'm naturally skeptical about praise from trainers agents etc. I hope that guy is right. Because as the writer says Kadri got a show me contract. He needs a big season. If not in points (given his likely line mates) then in effort nightly.

Boy, I'd love to see a consistently involved Kadri, I remember the last time a big whoop dee do was made of Kadri's training with Gary Roberts, afterwards he came to camp and was deemed out of shape so it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his interest/intensity thru the entire summer.

I enjoyed this article, it compares Kadri to 4 fairly big ticket players and discusses the comparable numbers.

Nazem Kadri: Wrongly Undervalued In Leafs Nation

Nazem Kadri is one of the most under-appreciated and undervalued players in the entire National Hockey League.

I?m not sure if it was the constant tire-pumping when he was drafted, his honest and outgoing personality or the power of the media in Toronto, but Nazem Kadri gets a bad rap for no good reason...

...If Nazem Kadri has a bounce back point season this year under Mike Babcock and whatever role the new coach puts him in then he?s going to hit the Toronto Maple Leafs cap account hard.
