Komarov signs with the Islanders

The biggest move he should be remembered for, and maybe even revered for, is getting out from under Phaneuf's contract without retaining any salary.

Is that Lou we should thank, or Pierre Dorion?

No matter how dumb NHL GM's are- and by the rumours surrounding Martin these days, there are plenty around- you still have to give kudos to Lou for working that deal.  Most of us didn't think we'd ever get out of it, and we did so without taking on another bad contract that lasted more than a season or retaining salary.

Also, I'm pretty sure Murray was still the GM at the time.

Eh. I don't remember the Phaneuf trade as being that remarkable. I know some people who thought Phaneuf was twice cooked garbage were shocked but people who thought he was a slightly overpaid but decent enough second pairing guy were less enthused.

He wasn't just slightly overpaid at the time. You were def in the minority me thinks.

I may have been in the minority given the large Leaf fan contingent who irrationally over criticize one player when the team is struggling but i just reread the trade thread and i definitely wasn't the only one who thought he wasn't too badly overpaid.

Phaneuf was a #3 or #4 dman that should of been paid accordingly. He was paid like a #1 defense therefore our expectations were way too high.

He actually looks pretty good in Ottawa when he's getting the proper amount of minutes and being placed in the proper situations.

I'm very glad he's gone. Wasn't a fan at all of his entire tenure, from his deal-making to his "rules" for players.

Yeah. He did alright in that first season where the Leafs were clearing house, but, after that? Really, after the Andersen trade, it's nothing great - at least, nothing any other GM could possibly have pulled off.

Maybe I'm attributing too much to lou, but I think he did actually add a lot of value early on in cutting a lot of phone lines from the internal offices to the media. A lot of bad contracts got "managed", the rumor mill completely died out, and the players got a buffer from external pressures that is quite intrusive in this market.

I agree with all that stuff. Keeping things on the down low, having all the media "noise" quieted so the players can just focus on playing was good. His decisions on which players he thinks add value to a team are bad, and ultimately that's the most important thing
