Leafs 2016/2017 Schedule in 10 game chunks

Wow that last 10 game stretch was nifty! Couldn't be happier that I was light on the win department!

Back and tanned and in with my 1 game late prediction again for the next stretch.

I don't think we'll repeat the dominance of the last ten but I think we'll give a solid 5-3-2 showing, starting with that win against the Sens.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

I agree.  The way they're playing, it's tough to stop a Matthews.

Next 6 games are huge for the Leafs.  After tonight they go on a 6 game road trip.  Come back from that trip with a winning record and the playoffs are a real possibility with the last 30 or so games to play.

You may think I made a mistake and copied that 4-0 win twice in a row, but I didn't, oh no sir I did not!

Yeah. This team is firing on all cylinders right now. They appear to be getting better and better. I'm sure they'll hit a rut at some point in the back half , but right now they seem unstoppable.

Why do I keep hearing that we need Defense??? hahahaha....

Well, Leafs are 5th worst in shots against per game, so tidying that up would go a long way to helping the long term success.

Two straight shutouts, eh?!  Looks like this chunk is turning out better than expected.  (*keeping fingers crossed*)

GO LEAFS GO!

GO LEAFS GO!

Hoping for a big win tonight going into the break.  I was worried that it was back to back, but then I see that Philly also played last night and also traveled from New York, so both teams are equally tired.  It's a winnable game!

They are all winnable now.

3rd most shot attempts against per 60 minutes 5-on-5, 5th most scoring chances against per 60 minutes 5-on-5, and 5th most goals against per 60 minutes 5-on-5, as well. Defence definitely needs improvement. A couple good goaltending performances against bad teams doesn't change that.

While I agree with what you're saying, there have been some decent articles recently positing that this is a byproduct of the system that generates close to league leading offense.

That seems to be true, to an extent. There are some high scoring teams that are bucking that trend in terms of shot attempts and such, and most are noticeably better than the Leafs in terms of 5-on-5 goals against/60. It may not be an area that's quite as disastrous as some of the numbers imply, but it's definitely an area that needs improvement.

The Leafs are tracking very closely to the Penguins in most per 60 measures.

Aside from the game, goal, points counts, these numbers are score/venue/zone adjusted.

What this wall of numbers tells me is that the Leafs are in a really good starting place right now. They're comparable to the reigning Stanley Cup champions in advanced metrics, play a similar multi-line speed/skill game that takes it up close and personal to the net front, and are ~10 years behind them on the development curve. The early run of oopsie games is the difference in standings. The Leafs are actually under performing a bit on the scoresheet relative to their expected goals for (GF < xGF).

Blueline management is something to continue cleaning up as our CA60 attests. Once the other team sets up, it's multiple chances each time, so it's best to improve on reducing zone entries. Andersen is covering up a lot of ills here, but he's part of the team and that still counts; ideally we want the team playing so well that he is nearly irrelevant.
