Leafs acquire Brandon Carlo

1st and Minten for Carlo, at 3.49M for another 2 years beyond this one, again, surprisingly, seems kinda, really good?
 
MoneyPuck is an xG% algorithm based on location data of shot attempt events. that stat is skewed quite readily by deployment and Carlo had DZ starts like 70-75% of the time pretty much always against top opposition forwards who are pretty good at shooting the puck. Defensive effectiveness is pretty hard to parse from the limited NHL data.

Despite having the lowest xGF and highest xGA rates (usually bad), his high danger goals against rate is the lowest on the team for full time defensemen even with that heavy DZ deployment. He's a younger Jani Hakanpaa, for all intents and purposes: a defensive/PK specialist that can help our more mobile LDs activate securely.

I think it's probably fair to say he has the strengths and weaknesses you would expect from a big defensive defenceman. But he's the #3/4 version of that and we've seen Rielly have success with the #6/7 version of that defenceman before so in theory it should be a terrific fit.

His numbers in Boston don't look amazing but he'll likely see a little easier minutes here being the secondary match-up guy behind Tanev instead of the primary one. His partner strength will also increase too. This season his most common partner was Zadorov, which obviously doesn't feel like a great fit, with Parker Wotherspoon and Jordan Oesterle being his next most common partners.

Good point. D-zone starts is a very important consideration when reviewing his stats.

I wasn't that familiar with him. That is the way it should be with good defensive dmen - you don't notice them.
He's a big, decent top four right handed dman who played pretty well for the Bruins - regular season and playoffs.
They have him for 2 more seasons beyond this.

Due to lack of familiarity, it is impossible for me to say very precisely how good or bad of it deal it is vs price paid.
I've looked at his scouting reports, end of season reviews, video, stats, opinions, etc.

He's not a bad player - a top 4 dman. Not as physically punishing as Schenn but a lot of attributes to compliment Rielly.

Leafs PK is around 79% (very average). He's the Bruins top PKer. Laughton is the Flyers top PK forward. If nothing else, the PK should get a good boost.

That was a seller's market - tough. They had two objectives - their biggest needs: a 2/3 center and righthanded defensive dman. They got them with some term. They're a better team today than they were yesterday.

I’m fine with moving on from Minten, I don’t see him developing into anything more than a 3rd line center if that… His hockey IQ is high but foot speed is slow and there’s no physicality to his game.

We’ve needed a RHD who can come in and slot into the #4 spot. Hopefully Carlo and Rielly can develop some chemistry and be a solid second pairing.
 
I liked Minten. I think he'll make the NHL and have a decent career.

But this report intrigued me. Made me wonder if Quillan helped to make Minten expendable ..

"I guess, the compliment I would pay him is that he's probably one of our more consistent forwards at getting in the blue paint and really getting in there and having those netfront goals, which are what I consider playoff goals and really sustainable offense.
"He's been really opportunistic for a good stretch here and that's filling him with confidence, obviously. I think if he continues to get to the net, he's going to be rewarded."

I think by now most would agree that the Carlo acquisition has been a success for the Leafs. Blood on face and a smile.
