Leafs Acquire Jake Muzzin

Liked the trade as we definitely need help on the backend. Didn't like seeing Grundstrom going. Think he's going to be a good NHL'er. Kid can score and has a little bit of grit which is what this team is lacking.

Nonetheless didn't sacrifice anything on the current lineup and the team is much better today.

I dunno... being a good ol' Canadian boy sort of gives you a lot of license to screw up defensively (see Rielly). We'll see if that's offset by being named Jake.

It certainly allows us to use "jake" as a verb for at least 1 more season.  That alone makes the deal golden.

Muzzin really checks all the boxes for every flavour of Leafs fan.

[x] Big
[x] Skates well
[x] Positive Corsi (etc.)
[x] Good at Zone Exits
[x] Hits hard
[x] Good ol' Ontario/Canadian Boy
[x] Grew up a Leafs fan
[x] Stanley Cup winner
[x] Inexpensive
[x] Solid beard

All of this will be forgotten after his first turnover.

Let me get started:

1.  Obviously inflated stats due to partner X in LA.
2.  Maybe doesn't like to play for Babcock.  Is it time to move Babcock out?
3.  May take the season to get used to new partner.
4.  I can see the skill, but he's just unlucky right now.
5.  His underlying stats look really good, and plus minus is a terrible stat.
6.  Used to losing in LA, maybe he's having trouble adjusting to actual expectations.
7.  He chipped the puck in at 2:36 of the 2nd period, obviously old school defender not adjusting to new NHL.

Also, while I'm generally on board the "this is a good trade and a good price" and everything I also hope that what this drives home, and what should maybe be seen as a lesson until the deadline, is why deals like the Boyle/Plekanec deals are bad and shouldn't be repeated. 2nd round picks, well used, can very quickly become valuable pieces that can be used to seriously upgrade the team. 4th line C's, aren't.

Perhaps we can trade Freddie the Goat to the Islanders for a 2nd?

What number will Jake Muzzin wear for the Leafs?

His preferred #6 is retired.

He wore #3 at one point in the AHL, and that number is currently occupied by Holl (who is likely to be loaned, but that number should be a lock).

I think he takes 8 to get a traditional defenseman's low number, or 66 to sort of match Rielly.

Edit: Just in case y'all didn't think I was overly serious about this sort of thing, this is from the off-season Marleau signing:

Because we're literally grasping at straws for content:
Marleau wears 12, and Connor Brown knows it. They haven't gone into negotiations yet, at the time of this interview, but I hope Brown gets a nice watch or something fun out of it.

Newmeros:
  • Marleau taking 12 is a foregone conclusion
  • Brown (if/when he is signed) takes 28
  • Kapanen (if he makes the team out of camp) used to wear 42 in Liiga, but since Bozak is still there (maybe), he'll likely take the vacated 24.
  • If Calle Rosen makes the team out of camp, his usual 39 is available.
  • If Travis Dermott makes the team, he's not getting his junior 44 from Rielly, and he's not getting his Marlies 8 from Carrick, so I'm going to suggest he take 23, which is 2^3 = 8 (or 4+4) because we know he's totally all about that sort of thing.

66 still feels wrong for anyone to wear. 67, on the other hand, feels like an underrated one.

What about Pesce? He's only 24 and signed for 5 more years at 4 per or is that too long seeing Sandin and Lilypad would hopefully be ready to go before then. This is a great move tho.

Because of the length and value of his contract, the cost to acquire him will almost certainly outweigh the value of his potential contributions. If the Leafs make any more moves, they'll be more of the depth type. Dubas should now really only be looking at cheap short-term improvements at the bottom end of the roster until they have the future cap situation more settled. Without moving money out, the team can't really bring any more future money in.

I dig it. Does wearing 66 matter that much for a defenseman?

It just feels weird to see. Like how 68 will always read as Jagr to me or 93 as Gilmour. None of it really matters though.

Love it.  Very insightful.

I kind of like the thought of being down by one (if one has to be down by one) and rolling these four over and over in the 3rd:

Rielly-Muzzin
Gardiner-Dermott

Aside:  I just looked at Rielly's page and was reminded he is only 24.  That's awesome.

The Muzz launches it into the stratosphere.

And besmirch the memory or Svehla?

Lebrun is quoting himself and Dubas's comments to feel vindicated?

If it's so important then why didn't Dubas make this trade last month to give Muzzin an extra TWO months to acclimatize??? Come on LeBrun ask the tough questions!
