Leafs acquire Michael Grabner

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the team has acquired forward Michael Grabner from the New York Islanders in exchange for forwards Taylor Beck and Carter Verhaeghe, defencemen Matt Finn and Tom Nilsson, and goaltender Christopher Gibson.

This opens up some contract spots so maybe all those PTOs make more sense now?

Verhaeghe? Meh. Gibson? Meh. Beck? Meh. Liked Nilsson though, maybe Finn too. Although both really only had like 4/5 defencemen potential though.

We're basically trading those guys for future draft picks in Grabner + any of the PTO guys this gives us a chance to sign now. I'll take potential Hunter picks over those prospects I guess.

That's one way to free up contract #'s!

Yeah, guys signing PTOs with Leafs that were at 50 contracts makes some more sense now.

Glencross and Boyes could very well get deals out of this.

Depending on how this all plays out, the most exciting part of this season might be watching how many picks the Leafs can accumulate.

JVR - Kadri - Lupul
Boyes - Bozak - Grabner
Glencross - Matthias - Parenteau
Komarov - Spaling - Winnik
Arcobello - Panik

Anyone still think this team will finish bottom 5 in the League?

Yep.  You need to check Grabner's numbers.

But it's more about the direction it looks like they are taking this season with the signing than just trading for Grabner. It opens the door for the other PTOs too. I think a lot of fans beleived this club was just going to go into the season with a core group of rookies and a skeleton roster. Although that still may be somewhat true, I think they will ice a team that can win this season as well.

Grabner's an interesting addition. If he has a productive year, he could make for a valuable trade piece at the deadline. None of the guys they moved out have much value. Beck's a 4th liner and the rest of depth/organizational filler/ordinary prospects. Finn and Verhaeghe are coming off disappointing seasons. Freeing up those contract spots is very important, too.

The direction they're taking this season? You mean accumulating a ton of spare parts that they can ship out for picks at the deadline, while not acquiring any highend talent or roster upgrades to supplement the team that finished with the 4th worst record in the league last season, and lost their top scoring forward and their top scoring defenceman? Yeah, this is not a group that has improved in overall talent from last season. Take away JvR, Kadri, Gardiner and Rielly, and they look an awful lot like the type of team you'd be able to put together in an expansion draft.

Missing Holland, who will likely be the 3C as Matthias apparently isn't a very good centre.

That's something to keep in mind though. We have space for PTOs on our contract limit but there's still a logjam of signed NHL forwards on the team. Moving Beck doesn't really change that.

All these PTOs and Grabner are just being accumulated in hopes that they have decent enough seasons to bring something at the deadline?
