Leafs announce extensions for Johnsson & Kapanen

True but you don't have to be in the city as Nylander proved Dec 1st.  I just think the timing is interesting going into the final weekend before July 1st.  I am crossing my fingers that Marner gets done tomorrow or Sunday.

They waited just to mess with you.

It does feel this way.  Being repeatedly kicked in the balls as a Leafs fan my entire life leaves me a bit jaded and nervous.

Trade value incentive?  I mean they aren't expensive contracts but it also makes them lockout proof!

If it ever comes to that, then yeah that could certainly make him more attractive. A big chunk of the total value of the deal gets paid off in that first signing bonus.

I think LK is on to something.  If Johnsson's is structured similarly (and I'll bet dollars to do-nuts it is) then (1) they get lockout proof dough, and (2) Leafs just made 2 potential trade chips more valuable as bait.

My guess is that all of these guys want that big chunk of bonus money in the first year because it lets them start looking for a nice house/car and the team uses it for leverage to get them to sign a slightly lower total value deal. I doubt trading them is a big consideration when the cap hit is this reasonable for players this young.

I'm with you, but the last couple of years it seems we've turned over a 'new leaf'. *Pun intended.

Dubas on the signings, including how the Leafs do business via signing bonus to offset some of the perceived disadvantages in Toronto (tax, cost of living).

It??s  good that the Leafs got these two contracts done.  At least Dubas is moving in a direction.

Now, onto Mitch...

Apparently his legit nickname. I can't remember why, but I think they discuss it in the Leafs Blueprint web show.

Some coach in Sweden started calling him that and the name stuck. Someone mentioned mango in Swedish sort of sounds like idiot but don't quote me on that
