Leafs at the World Championships

Everybody's favourite time of year has come once again!

A few players have revealed their status for this tournament in the past hour during their final PCs of the season:

-Kessel will not play for the US.
-Bernier will not play for Canada. Seems to be because of his contract status and injuries.
-JVR has been invited but is still thinking it over. Possibly some injury concerns there.
-Rielly has been invited but needs to get cleared by the Leafs doctors first, it seems likely that he'll play though.
-Komarov says that he has to be cleared by Leafs doctors first, but expects to play for Finland.

Be interesting to see if Phaneuf plays for Canada. Also if there's any interest in Bozak.

Some of the Bruins would be interesting too...Bergeron, Marchand, Lucic, Hamilton.

EDIT:  Benn, Seguin, Spezza in Dallas, Giroux, Couture, Thornton, and Burns in SJ...Hartnell, Tyson Barrie...Ekblad...

Hall, Eberle, RNH, Seguin, Spezza, Ekblad, Mike Smith, Giroux, Duchene, MacKinnon, O'Reilly, Barrie are apparently all in. Benn, Couture, Johansen have declined (Benn because of injury, not sure about the other two).

That's a pretty stacked forward group. I feel like it's much stronger than what Canada's been used to at this tournament lately. You can basically run an Edmonton, Colorado, and Dallas line so instant chemistry too.

And with RNH, Giroux, Seguin, Spezza, MacKinnon, Duchene, and O'Reilly all there I'm guessing they're pretty confident at centre, meaning Bozak can likely start his vacation.

Without checking last year's roster, that looks pretty damn strong to me too.

Guess we'll have to see the defense roster...also goaltending...be nice of Luongo was in there.

Drew Doughty?  If they have Doughty - Ekblad - Rielly that's a good start already.

Also wonder if there's an outside chance for Nylander, if his Marlies season ends in time, to play for Sweden.

Gardiner is going to play for the US. He joins a pretty young blueline there with Justin Faulk (23), John Moore (24), Connor Murphy (22), and Blue Jackets prospect Mike Reilly (21).

I guess Reilly hasn't received medical clearance from Leaf doctors yet?  He seemed interested in going.

MacKinnon went backwards this year in Colorado.

.76 ppg in 13-14 to .59 ppg in 14-15.

Didn't realize he went that far backwards.

Sophomore jinx and scoring was down all across the board.

Someday I think someone should really try and do an analysis on whether or not the host city is a good travel destination affects the World Cup team Canada puts together.

No Reilly wow, that is quite surprising to me. Yet I am a bias Leaf Fan

That's too bad.  How can he earn a spot on our next Olympic team missing out on the WC?

Like I said in the first post, he was invited by Team Canada. So he must be a little more dinged up than he thought.

Not to turn this into a Kessel thread...but why isn't he playing?  Is he hurt?  I thought I read somewhere that he wasn't hurt.

Generally speaking the guys who are Olympic locks on Canada/USA don't usually play in this tournament.

Eh...I agree to a certain extent.  Still, it would have been nice for him to go and play some "meaningful" hockey with some great players which he hasn't done in the past 3 months.

I believe it was an article in the SUN that stated Rielly has an MRI this week that will determine if he goes to the WC.  I'm pretty sure that's why they only named 5 defensemen yesterday.
