Leafs at the World Championships

Eh...I agree to a certain extent.  Still, it would have been nice for him to go and play some "meaningful" hockey with some great players which he hasn't done in the past 3 months.

Their best forward at the moment is probably Marc Arcobello, so great might be a stretch ;)

I do get what you're saying though, but just getting away from hockey for a bit and putting this season behind him might be what he needs too.

No Reilly wow, that is quite surprising to me. Yet I am a bias Leaf Fan

Like I said in the first post, he was invited by Team Canada. So he must be a little more dinged up than he thought.

I believe it was an article in the SUN that stated Rielly has an MRI this week that will determine if he goes to the WC.  I'm pretty sure that's why they only named 5 defensemen yesterday.

An MRI on which body part?  I wasn't aware he was injured?

Not to turn this into a Kessel thread...but why isn't he playing?  Is he hurt?  I thought I read somewhere that he wasn't hurt.

He was worried that his coach will make him forecheck and go into the corners to get loose pucks.

How true!  He also can't have Bozak as his centre!

No idea.  The information wasn't provided.  Here is what was said in the SUN:

The only hockey remaining for a Leafs is the world championships. Game-weary goaltender Jonathan Bernier was invited by Team Canada but said no, Morgan Rielly is considering it pending an MRI. Van Riemsdyk is also on the fence for Team USA, but Kessel has said no. Leo Komarov will play for Finland.

Very simple answer, Kessel is in hockey for the money alone.  There's no money in playing for your country at the World Championships!

This is why players don't want to play in the Toronto market. We have no idea why Kessel is not going to play at the worlds. There are dozens of legitimate reasons for his decision (one of them, off the top of my mind is that his career is in turmoil after this horrible season, and he needs time to figure it out), but the media have made some comments about his play, and now the fans are turning on him like a pack of wolves. Now, even if it is determined the reason for his play this season was due to an undisclosed injury, he is as good as gone, because of all the venom that has been spewed at him.

And, for all we know, the Leafs may have even quietly discouraged him from playing at the Worlds to eliminate the risk of injury if they're trying to trade him.

Well, maybe Kessel should have made his reasons known as to why he is not playing for the U.S. of A.

If Kessel doesn't like how he is now being treated by some of us Leaf fans, maybe he should have played hockey like he cared this season.  :o

I'm not a fan of BIG MONEY hockey players playing like DOG POOP!  >:(

Sorry if I upset you!  :-[

Man I hate when people work in order to earn money.

So true, working is so overrated.  It's a lot more fun staying home and collecting a small pension!  8)

Maybe he doesn't need to justify himself because he's an adult and not someone behoven to your approval..........

Generally speaking the guys who are Olympic locks on Canada/USA don't usually play in this tournament.

I'm pretty sure that the World Championship is about as devoid of meaning as any hockey competition there is. Like CtB said, most established players pass on it because nobody cares about it.

No kidding.  Thank you. :)  I appreciate the voice of reason I've read from you and other's on this site with respect to this particular situation.

Well, hopefully, he'll be traded to another team that will motivate him to actually earn his pay cheques!  I'm sick of his one dimensional, oh please don't hit me, apathetic and uninspired play with our Leafs.

No, he doesn't have to justify himself to me personally, however, being a public figure, being paid millions of dollars, collected from fans like myself, it might be nice gesture for him to at least make it known why he declined to play for his country.

Kessel is not playing playoff hockey now, so, why couldn't he start his off season training by playing in an international tournament?  In my opinion, his lack of interest in playing in the WC just makes me think he's not interested in the game itself, unless he's getting huge sums of money to do so.  Even then, his commitment to play a solid 2 way games is very lacking.

How much does he get paid in the Olympics?  Big bucks?
