And I'm loving Carrick's game. Sometimes you got to be missed to be appreciated, I guess.

That physical element is a welcome addition. Especially this time of year. These last three games have been playoff style hockey!

Nylander with 9 straight games with a point. Also two straight game winning goals, the first of which was probably his first empty netter ever.

Offside is not an egregious error. A linesman will never be two feet off.

:)

What's crazy is that it's basically entirely that one lineman's fault that we're in this mess. He calls that offside and we probably don't have reviews for it. But everybody lost their mind after that and overreacted.

I stand corrected. Should be a call down for that stuff, slightly offside ruins the spirit of the game. I'm sure it'll happen in a close playoff series.

Here's Bowen's call on Willy's game winner:

Verdict on that rule is you don't have to put a guy in the box right away. There usually is at least on whistle in a 5-minute major. There was no whistle during the entire penalty. But apparently Babs said it was on him. Hearing that from Friedman and Millard.

I don't know how true that is. Coaches complain about the play being offside all the time. That was just the worst of it. Once the coach's challenge was put in, there was going to be offside reviews. Without it, introducing the challenge would have only been about goalie interference.

The rule obviously needs to be worked on. I don't think it needs to be tossed completely, but reviewing for offside should only come into play if a goal is scored on the initial play created by the entry. Anything after that, and you're going back too far.

Good suggestion, that makes sense.

I really thought Polak had cost us the game!  Wow!    ;D
To be fair it looked like the ref wasn't even going to call a penalty until he realized the guy was hurt. Bad hit, yes even tho the guy did turn into it. 5 minute major, not a chance.  PK did a great job and Fehr played very good. Liked his game.

"God bless you boys"  that was quite the performance.  1 shot on a five minute major?  maybe 3 on a 7 minute one?  Boyle's line completely changes the look of this team now.  There will be plenty of time to dissect whether he was worth giving up the pick for but I didn't know how much we were missing someone like boyle until i saw us with him.  I wonder if he's as sorely missed on Tampa right now. It'll be hard to generate that kind of emotion tomorrow night but tonight was fun.

Video challenge to an offside is the worst rule the NHL has come up with in a while.  It takes away goals that happen well after the event and have little to do with the event.  Just live with the referee's call.

Edit: video replay to see if a goal is a goal or if a goal is kicked in or gloved in is fine -- all those things revolve around the event of scoring a goal.  The offside is too far beforehand to matter much (normally).

Agree 100%.

One of those things...

"That will never happen in my lifetime again.  I can tell you that.  I will never wait to put a guy in." --  Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock on not having a player serve Roman Polak's major penalty.

My thoughts exactly.  Or treat it like a delayed penalty call.  As soon as the defending team gains control of the puck it cancels out the opportunity for reviewing offside.  If you have control, get the puck out of your zone.

I think the main issue with the offside reviews is the length of time they are taking.  The problem stems from the offside rule being that the player needs to have one skate still touching the ice on the other side of the blueline.  Most of the long reviews come from not being able to really tell if his skate is on the ice or just a hair above it.

If you change the rule to be both skates breaking the plane of the blueline it will take much less time to review them and people won't care as much.  The main problem the NHL is concerned about with that rule is people kicking their skate out in the air to stay onside and causing injuries.  I don't think that is really an issue though.

Offsides are just funny in general.  Like why one skate?  Because two, is too many?

Why not any body part?  Think of the contortion that would happen.
