Leafs @ Canucks - Mar. 6th, 9:00pm - SNO, TSN 1050

Not a great goal for Andersen to let in, not sure why Rielly gave Edler so much space even before he got the puck either though.

And in a nutshell, that?s the problem with Andersen. Best goalie on the planet for 5 periods.  Then gives up some weak goals and it?s a loss that quickly.

Bad effort all around.

Probably because there was no way a guy like Edler should get that past Andersen.

So much for the perfect leading-into-the-third record.

So he should be perfect 100% of the time.  I'll make a note of that.

Not all the time. Just for when we all stay up late for the west coast games.

Andersen should have had the first and third goals but the team overall was junk tonight. Couldn't even control the puck in ot. Wish Nylander had converted on that one chance but what are you gonna do? Sucks losing to the Canucks especially leading by 2, this is their Stanley Cup tonight

Andersen didn?t play well but neither did Matthews or Tavares.

Our top players - especially Matthews - have to find a way to drive possession. His advanced stats have been pretty ugly for about a dozen games.

The obvious thing to do would be to play Matthews with Nylander when Kadri is healthy. But for whatever reason Babcock seems to have decided that?s not in the cards.

We sure are missing Gardiner and Dermot.  They would have helped in OT.

Zaitsev, Rielly, Muzzin, and Hainsey were all over 23 minutes tonight. Marincin was at 13 and Holl at 10. The Leafs are going to be without those two for probably the rest of March. Rosen's foot can't heal quick enough.

Numbers don't really show that they had a good night either. Kinda wish they had another game or two but that'll probably be that for the trio.

Andersen's hands-down the MVP of this team.  Not even really close, Rielly and JT and MM notwithstanding.  Just not tonight.

Our best player, Matthews, is #5.

Horrible OT. No effort at all. Looks like they were all gassed.
Matthews needs to pick it up. Did absolutely nothing in the game in Calgary for 2 periods and tonight was no better. Oh well on to Edmonton who have been playing better as of late.

I know Matthews isn't scoring but I don't buy this he's doing absolutely nothing stuff. He had and created some good chances tonight, just nothing went in.
I'm not sure but I think the OT goal went off Rielly?s stick. Anyway stuff happens. One guarantee. The Goat will be back to centre on the 4th line. If Kadri is back Sat, I hope he puts Nylander with Matthews where he belongs.

Did the Hobbits line work last night? I thought they were fine, but couldn't get much going.
But pretty much none of them worked and all our goals were muffins.

What was the problem?
The Leafs couldn't generate any speed through the neutral zone because the backend was having all sorts of trouble moving the puck cleanly. This is what life without Gardiner (and Dermott) looks like. By the time OT rolled around, our top 4 D were gassed (because Marincin and Holl saw very limited ice), and this is basically what happens when your 'efforts' to keep your bench fresh only come up after losing 33% of the group to injury.

What's up with Matthews?
He's centering a line that has no playmakers to break down defenses with. It's only rush options. Kapanen's great in straight-line transition and generating breakaways for himself, but his brain is not nearly as fast as his legs. Johnsson's great at capitalizing on opportunities but isn't a consistent generator of one. Matthews can turn many lesser opportunities into scary good ones, but not if he never has the puck. He buzzed Markstrom with a couple tough shots that couldn't be cleanly handled, but on rush plays, there is next to no follow up for those chances.

What's up with Nylander?
He's lined up with two opportunistic shooters, but neither of them have the gamespeed to make passes. Nylander can carry it himself (better than anyone else on the team, yes better than Marner, fight me), but his slot passes are clunking off sticks that aren't ready, or going back up to defensive dump shots. When he goes to the front of the net, no one else on the ice can pass well enough to get him anything to work with. It'll be really good to have Kadri back.

So what you are basically saying, herman, is that Nylander needs to be put back with Matthews and stay there, forever.

I agree.  And then Nylander needs to start putting up points.

Matthews: He's very very good.  He may be elite, among the very best of the best, someday.  He's not there yet IMO.  Put him with Nylander and let's see what happens.

I say again they should try him on the PK.  As a zone entry disrupter and open-ice playmaker, he could be almost as good as Marner.  He can steal pucks and use his stick to blow up rushes with the best of them, if given a chance.

Muzzin: He's looked pretty awful after the first 5 or so games, during which he looked like just what the doctor ordered.  Babcock needs to take him off the 2PP and never ever ever ever EVER put him out in OT.  That's just unfair to him.  Strike me dead and whatnot, but he needs to play like a (gasp) stay at home defenseman.  He'll get back on the beam.
