Leafs First NHL Team Worth a Billion

Did you know that the referees are not being paid either. Sorry but the fallout from this conflict hurts a lot of people whom are not in the millionare bracket and are struggling to meet their rents. Bartenders, popcorn vendors everyone

If it weren't for the other information available regarding the sale of MLSE, etc, I'd probably agree, but, I have a hard time believing the the Leafs alone represent close to 60% of MLSE's market value. If Forbes is including the ACC as part of that valuation, then maybe, but the Leafs alone? I'm not so sure.

Admittedly it's been a while since I read up on these concepts but I think what's throwing you is that the 2.05 billion figure is what Forbes had as MLSE's enterprise value which can differ substantially from their market value.

Possibly, though Forbes uses that figure as the enterprise value and as the sale price - which, of course, according to every other report I've found, is incorrect.

The New York Rangers ($750 million) and Montreal Canadiens ($575 million) were the second and third top valued teams on the list and together with the Maple Leafs accounted for 83% of the NHL?s income.

That's incredible.  I don't know if the other big leagues have the same sort of revenue imbalance...but wow.

Which is why I doubt whether the NHL will allow a 2nd team in the GTA, despite all the punditry to the contrary.  Why cannibalize your top franchise?  The idea that a 2nd franchise in TO would automatically be synergistic is wishful thinking IMO.

The way the NHL thinks, I would imagine they feel that choppoing MLSE revenue in half would make them happy, so they can say "Hey see now FOUR teams account for 83% of the revenue so TAKE THAT!"

The Leafs are now worth an NHL-high of $1.15B...
