I'm sure we had a thread about this, it may have been Before The Crash, but CP24's George Lagogaines (spelling!) just did a story about how there's an offer in for the Leafs from the same American company that owns the NY Yankees. Yikes! eeek!

not liking that idea

not just the Leafs, apparently they wanna buy MLSE

To be fair, the company in question - Providence Equity Partners - own a minority share in YES (Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network), not the Yankees themselves.

Then Lagoganes (sp) is misinformed. He said that Providence Equity Partners owns a percentage of the Yankees, and set up that YES network so they could control the broadcast of the their games.

Either way, I still don't want my Leafs owned by some Yanks.

Canadian, American, Klingon. - I really don't care who owns 'em as long as they have deep pockets and don't start to want cutting from the front office etc... Ticket prices are a non-issue for me. Triple the prices for all I care, they've been so far out of my league for so long it makes absolutely no difference.

Q'Plah!

imagine Worf with the painsticks as the new coach.......
I think we found our new coach..

I think Mr. Spock would be better, really.  That way they'll be serving Vulcan bromide soup instead of pizza!  ;D

If the Leafs are sold, will they be operated as a business or a sports team?  I believe that under MLSE, it was as a business.  Actions such as selling pieces of hockey net for profit.  Looking for ways to increase profits while at the same time screwing the fans over with a horrible product on the ice or insane concession prices.  The Leafs were rated dead last of all NHL teams in terms of dollar value for the product (tickets to the game, concessions etc.).  And answer this one.  How many playoff rounds have the Leafs, Raptors, or Toronto FC won since 2003?

I can see that they had a moral obligation to the shareholders, and I totally understand that, but with a winning team on the ice, I do believe that there would be even more profits for shareholders.  If the new group buys the Leafs, I hope they will demand success for the teams.

An American company could buy the Leafs, make some money giving up territory rights so clubs could move into Hamilton, etc. and then sell for a handsome profit.

It could happen but let's not forget that the sale we're talking about is 80%. I'm not certain they could just go ahead and do that without the approval of the remaining 20%. Same applies with a new Canadian owner too so again, it doesn't matter.

Maybe #99 will be part of the Leaf organization one day after all?

Sportsnet has confirmed that the Great One has been approached by multiple groups to be involved in purchase of MLSE.

Doesn't 80% get to dictate to the 20%? If I bought 80% of something, I
wouldn't be too worried what the 20% had to say if I really wanted to do something...

So, they'd devalue the broadcast rights of the team by making their territory smaller and then still be able to sell the team for a "handsome" profit? Flawed logic, if I've ever seen it.

I can't say for sure but I'm almost positive an issue like this would need approval from 100% of the Board of Directors. - Which would be represented appropriately by that 20%.

I think what's being alluded to here is that Larry Tannenbaum, who owns the 20%, would have the ability to match any offer that the Teacher's Pension Plan might receive for their  80% of MLSE.

Tannenbaum has the right of first refusal since he is the 20% stakeholder.

If Gretzky's first order of business would be to fire Wilson, I'd be all for this ownership change.  Let's make er happen.

You made me laugh with that post in this thread.  :)

I'm confident that you will eventually get your wish in the relatively near future (next couple of seasons at the latest).
