Leafs for sale (cont'd).....

What people seem to forget is that there were 2 other teams included in this deal, that being TFC and the Marlies. Those teams along with all the broadcast properties and the real estate make the price seem reasonable.

I included TFC(and BMO field) in my original post so they're not forgotten. Likewise, nobody is saying it's an unreasonable price. I'm just wondering what the price was for the Leafs.

If it breaks down like:

Raptors - 350 million
TFC - 100 million
BMO field - 50 million
ACC - 200 million
Real Estate - 200 million
Marlies - 25 million

Then you still have the Leafs going for almost 800 million. Looking over that list, acknowledging that I'm entirely spit balling on the real estate, my estimates seem high, if anything. I don't think that TFC, BMO, the ACC or the Marlies would go for that much piecemeal.

One thing I would like to see is for Leafs TV to be available for purchase across the country, and not just in the TO area.  I would also like to see games on CTV in addition to TSN, RSO and CBC.  Or some other arrangement so that living outside Ottawa I can see more Leaf games on TV.

Unfortunately, that's really an issue they won't get around. I'm sure Rogers/Bell would love to sell Leafs TV nationwide but the realities of the league's rules on broadcast territory will torpedo that.

That "policy" is BS. Will it "kill" the Oilers if 50,000 (highly unlikely) viewers watched a Leafs game from Edmonton area while the Oilers were playing? No. The Sens might have a bit of an argument but that's only because 75% of the people in the Sens area would rather watch the Leafs.  With a Toronto sat dish I can't tune in to a Jets-Habs game? That's very short-sighted on the NHL's part - they should want as many eyeballs as they can get. It would be an interesting study to estimate the viewership numbers if this policy was cancelled.

Well, it may not kill either team but it is an important revenue stream that could be pretty significantly diminished. In the case of a team like the Sens which, as you mention, are trying to carve out a fanbase in an established market it's probably something they view as a necessity.

For what it's worth it's not like the NHL is alone in that regard. Both the NBA and NFL have pretty strict local broadcast rules as well.
