Leafs Get Andersen from Ducks

Neither of those picks represented good shots at drafting a top pairing defencemen. In fact, the odds of landing a full-time NHLer is less than 50% on both picks.

That's really only true if there's a potential top pairing defenceman available in the draft. Based on what I've read, that's really unlikely outside the top 10-15 picks in either draft.

Well, there's the guy near the top of the draft next year - and if guys like Bozak and JvR get moved out without established replacements coming in, the Leafs are likely to have pretty good odds at having a shot at him. But, really, expecting to find a top pairing defenceman in the 2nd round is foolish endeavour. When you're talking about picks that have a 1 in 3 chance of even being an NHL player, there are no good shots. There's just shots - most of which will fail.
 
Been a member here since the early days going back 14 years. I visit often and tend not to post much but had to chime in here.

Relax people, a little early to pass judgment on this move, we should at least wait until about 2 weeks as this is one  move of several that are likely over the next few weeks and this summer. If anything the last year has shown we have a competent Management Team (finally) and my sense is there are several moves coming.

We Leaf fans are a fickle bunch, for good reason based on our last few decades, at the same time a wait and see approach in the next few weeks may be worth it.

In the absence of good shots, your best bet is a lot of them. Finding elite defensemen in the second round isn't a great bet but it happens enough that I don't know if you want to justify trading away two cracks at it by virtue of having a lot of picks in total.

The 12 picks thing was already a bit misleading because of how many lower round picks they have. I've used the 2010 Florida draft as an example of what the Leafs need/should aim for and this isn't quite in the spirit of that.

I think that's the part that doesn't sit well with me.  It's the trading and signing to a long term contract without the guy even playing a game for the Leafs yet.  This could backfire.  The nice thing is, if it does backfire it means higher picks in the draft, but then there is the contract.
 
I wonder if durability had something to do with this...ie. the most games reimer played for the leafs in a season is 37 (his first year) and he battled injuries most of his time here, whereas anderson has eclipsed that number in 2 out of 3 seasons he played for anaheim topping out at 54 gp.

add to that hes 2 years younger and had pretty monstrous numbers in the playoffs this year (small sample size I know but you want a big game goalie)

just some thoughts as to why I think this is a good deal.
 
I'm surprised by the negativity. The Leafs have essentially zero talent and depth in goal; they weren't likely to address this outside of free agency. Andersen has an impressive resume and is young enough to take a mild gamble on as a long term solution- I'm not in the least bit bothered about giving up that 30th overall pick.

This is a terrific move, imo.

Assuming he doesn't implode like another touted 1B the Leafs acquired I like this.  I don't think it can be compared to signing a contract like this at other positions (which would be hard to defend) because I see value in a developing team having decent goaltending for morale purposes, as opposed to playing nervous and losing otherwise good games on stinkers.
 
Trade for a goalie and then sign him immediately to a long term contract.

I have seen this movie before and I don't like how it ends.

Beyond the obvious historical parallels, IMO we have not developed to the point at which we needed to do this. Next year is going to be about the same as last year given the fact that the team will have so many rookies and younger players and fewer veterans on expiring contracts. So what is the hurry to shell out another $5M+ for a 26 year old goalie for 5 years. I just do not see the need.

The cap is likely to remain fairly static and with many teams at or near the cap and facing an expansion draft that will require one goalie to be exposed, so on that account too,I would have waited.

Finally, it is my opinion that we overpaid. LL's comment that the price is immaterial tells me that he knows we overpaid.

I sincerely hope I am wrong because 5 years is a long time to put up with Raycroft/Toskala II.
 
I think sometimes we get too caught up in the Leafs own history on moves like this. It didn't work with Toskala, it has worked with other goalies. I don't think precedent tells us much here.
 
So what do you figure the likelihood of the Leafs still taking a flyer on a goalie somewhere in the draft might be (just to get another young goalie in the system)?

I'd bet pretty good. I just don't know if I see it in the first two rounds.
