Cowen is also lacking in the departments our management team is specifically drafting for: skill, speed, hockey IQ. These are not things that can be taught in 18 days, or even a year.

Exactly. They're not things that can be taught at all, really. They can be honed or helped to reach their potential, but when the ceiling of those areas is low, that's not going to help much. I mean, you can polish a turd, but, at the end of the day . . .

I want to say Lou said this while on the Fan yesterday. Someone was asking about Cowen, where he was drafted, his potential, and how he can fit in. To paraphrase, the answer was along the lines of he's big, and no one can take that away from him. Not really anything else remotely complimentary.

EDIT: Come to think of it, they should trade Reimer and put Cowen in goal.

He also said something to the effect that they're taking a top 4 d out of their lineup and not replacing him, if confirmation on Jared's place in the dcorps was really needed.

It's great to finally see the Leafs step up their tank game.

We've never seen this Buffalo-Edmonton style of commitment before.  :)

Tomorrow's Edmonton Sun headline: "Oilers shatter previous shots-on-goal record of 62 set in 1983-84 season with 128 shot barrage."

Fresh batch of Leaf injuries: James Reimer (groin) - day-to-day
Jonathan Bernier (death) - out indefinitely

Why I don't disagree, I'm curious if this this universal knowledge- why are the Leafs putting him in a uniform? Why not give these minutes to Harrington or Marincin?

Harrington is injured I believe. Marincin is a relatively known quantity.
Cowen is not playing at this time anyway. He's projected to be out 10 days to work out his stiff hip.

Even though we are all well aware of what the management team is doing, it behooves them to treat their players as if they are valuable, especially the recently acquired.

So Glenning will get a chance, protecting the Marlies core without saying they're bypassing those that have earned a cup of coffee with the big team. Cowen represents the same on the defense side and the Leafs will work their bioscience team to make sure Cowen is as fit as he can be in this short time before the deadline.

Like they did with Corrado? I think they monogrammed a name in one of the chairs in the press box for him for the first 3 months.

I don't think anyone in a hockey management position would see Cowan as anything but hot garbage that was a money throw in - and only has value as a buyout credit. So I can't quite understand why there'd be any value in showcasing him.

Marincin will get into games (especially after the deadline, when Polak will be gone, and possibly other defencemen), but he's in a similar boat - he's a fairly known quantity at this point. Giving him the extra minutes isn't going to make much a difference as far as he's concerned.

As for Harrington . . . my guess is the Leafs don't want to bring him up until he's A) healthy and B) will have a regular spot in the lineup, rather than being part of a rotation. He could also see time after the deadline, depending on how long he's out for.

It's not about showcasing him at all. He'd get into the lineup purely as filler for the rest of the season so that the Leafs don't have to expose any prospects to the gong-show of a roster they'll likely be running with.

How could you possibly know what they plan to do?

Because, I know they're smart hockey men who have a good grasp on just how bad Cowen's skating issue are and where his actual value lies. When they've talked about the assets they picked up in the trade, they've focused on Lindberg and the draft pick. Everyone else involved has basically been an afterthought. The writing is on the wall. All you have to do is read it.

I remember seeing him before his injuries and surgery. There is talent there and he's a giant.  The Leafs have excellent trainers and medical people, not to mention the best coaching staff in the league.  He might well be done but I'm not betting money on it.  Time will tell I guess....

Jiminy, and I thought people used to be hard on Jyrkke Lummi.  Let's see him try to play at least before we treat him like something to flush.

Just because we haven't seen him in a Leafs uniform doesn't mean we haven't had the opportunity to see him play on a number of occasions - against the Leafs and other teams.

I watched him on the Sens many a night after he got his big contract extension. Slow, painfully bad with the puck, and a penchant for taking stupid penalties.

Corrado was a unique situation as a waiver pick up. It was recently revealed by Babcock that they were trying to get him up to playing strength. Showcasing Polak was also an added benefit, as his play evened out after a rocky start.

I don't think they are showcasing Cowen at all, just giving him a chance to prove to himself he can still play. Our goal isn't to win anyway, so this will only pay dividends at the draft when Cowen proves he cannot play (hopefully by getting turnstiled a few times for goals against).

Well, I'd like to see how he does on our team anyhow before totally trashing him
