Also, first in benchings, first is "discussions after practice", first name in the rumour mill, first to be singled out after the game, etc.

Benchings, this will be the first game he misses all season. Reilly, Ranger and Fraser I believe have all been healthy scratches ahead of him.

I don't know how you know who Carlyle has the most discussions after practice with.

Rumour mill, I don't see how that has anything to do with Carlyle.

I watch pretty much every post game conference from Randy, I can't say I've noticed Gardiner being singled out any more than other players. In fact Carlyle doesn't tend to single out players at all for poor efforts after games.

I'm glad Gardiner is handling the news better than a lot of you...

Jake Gardiner says he's not surprised he's scratched. "I didn't play good (on Monday). I have to make better decisions with the puck."

I only spoke with Jake Gardiner briefly, but he made it clear he understood what the #leafs want from him.

easily one of the most exiting players to watch?can be a game changer when he is on.  Saw him play in Tampa two seasons ago and he was on fire. Now we can get more of watching Frazer, Orr and that other stiff get ice time.

Eh. Sitting him for a game isn't going to hurt the kid long term. I wouldn't consider this much more than a maintenance day. Just an opportunity for a little rest and to study some things, that's all. Not much to see here, I don't think.

I don't see the point in scratching him, he's not 19, let him play through it.  He did his time last season.

So now he's removed from being sat down for playing a horrendous game? It's not his first terrible game either.

He's been inconsistant next year and perhaps a step back is what he needs. Sometimes viewing things from the outside helps these kids.

Some Pittsburgh news:

Matt D'Agostini was claimed off waivers by Buffalo so obviously he won't be playing for the Pens. Paul Martin and Tanner Glass have been placed on the injured reserve And Chris Conner, Jayson Megna and Simon Despres have all been called up from Wilkes-Barrie and will likely play tonight.

And it won't be his last terrible game.  I'd rather lose with Gardiner on the ice than Fraser.  He needs to play in my opinion, that's it.  Plenty of players have terrible games without ever being sat.  Gardiner's been sat enough before.  Let him play is all I'm saying.

Honestly, even on an off night he was far and away the more valuable player than Fraser.

I don't know what it is with some fans turning a magnifying glass on Gardiner and Rielly. They've been more useful, productive and consistent than both Ranger and Fraser this year, and potentially Gunnarson as well (who in my opinion has looked pretty slow and soft). Fraser, in particular, moves at a snail's pace and makes bad decisions. He sure as hell isn't going to be the one to break this team out of its offensive slump.

I expect another loss.

I actually see the Leafs winning this one. Fleury is the reason why.

I think Pittsburgh's D will have more to do with it. Missing both Scuderi and Martin is a pretty big blow.

But yeah, I expect a win too. Which will probably keep Gardiner in the pressbox for another game.

Columbus beat the Leafs with a depleted line up and far less talent that Crosby and Malkin.  I'm not holding my breath for tonight.

If it was one bad game that'd be fine and I'd agree with you. But it's not. It's been a struggle all season. We've seen glimpses of what he can do, but if anything, in my books, Rielly has passed him on the depths charts and Gardiner needs a good kick in the pants. If that means watching a game or two from upstairs, I'm all for it.

Carlyle is losing it. Some of his decisions are simply mind boggling. In regards to Gardiner I said this before with his situation early last year how they had such high praise for him and then having trouble cracking the lineup. I think the concussion at the start of the year had something to do with that. Then he had a stellar playoff and everything looked so promising again to start this season and again they dick him around. Go from untouchable to sitting and trade rumours. This team just knows how to mess with young players. Think they are doing it with Kadri to and not from Burke keeping him in the minors but since he has been up full time. Although I personally have not been pleased with his play I think a lot has to do with how Carlyle has handled him. These 2 guys are important pieces in the future of this team and I think their play can be attributed to Carlyles handling of them. Honestly don't know why they didn't leave the team the way it was after last season except for the Bernier trade, picking up a centre instead of Clarkson and getting the team to play better defensively as a whole. Build from there. They were at least exciting to watch.

So Gardiner apparently had his worst game of the season but had the highest TOI on the team.  If he wasn't good that game why was he played more than anyone else?  Weird.

Well it is Carlyle we are talking about here, so it kinda makes perfect sense.
