Leafs Prospects Scouting Reports

...and let's not forget about Gardiner (though he's not really a prospect any more.) I miss Leaf hockey.  :( Well, parts of it.

Only one man's opinion but this tweet made me happy;

At the draft I said it's a coin flip but lean Rielly. I maintain that. RT @biggsbrownross: Is Ryan Murray still better than Morgan Rielly?

Okaaaay, although I clearly remember him leaning heavily toward Murray at the draft and for a long while after.  Quite heavily.

One's opinion can change, that's for sure, and Rielly is causing a lot of people to do that so far this year.

In his pre-draft rankings he had Rielly one spot ahead of Murray. It was Dumba who he said was the top defenceman in the draft, albeit not by much.

Yeah here's his top 100 prior to the draft.

Thanks. I recall on his twitter feed he was all about Murray but can't search that far back. Anyway, Rielly is rocketing up everyone's charts since Oct and we're all taking credit. ;)

I know we Leaf fans get all dizzy with out prospects and everything but it genuinely seems we've got a gem here. - Or, I'm dizzy.  :P

I still wonder who'll end up being the better NHL defenseman..Morgan Rielly or Justin Schultz....hmmm...

This got me thinking.. what if Schultz had chosen Toronto instead of Edmonton? The Leafs would have Gardiner, Schultz and Reilly, (and Finn) coming into the program. That would have been interesting.

( Next up; did Bigfoot vote for Obama?)  ;D

Too many offensive minded defenseman?

A team usually needs at least 2 or 3 pretty good puck movers on the back end to be successful. Besides that, Finn's defensive abilities are fairly well regarded. Offensive minded doesn't always mean defensively porous.

After watching Shultz score the OT winner last night for Oklahoma City, one would have to think Burke missed out on one hell of a player. Hopefully Rielly turns out to be more than just a consolation prize. I'd love it if he turns out the better D-man of the two!

Hard to compare  them (prospect-wise) given the four year age difference though.

Plus, we've still got Gardiner.

Not really a scouting report but Tom Nilsson is following the former coach for our Junior Team and has signed with Fr?lunda in SEL.

Leafs prospect goaltender Garrett Sparks, (Gold medallist Team USA 2013 WJHC), had plenty to say about ESPN's hockey and NHL coverage in general:

Speaking of Sparks and Nilsson, Cox suggested last week after the Leivo signing that these 2 will be next.

Outspoken, this kid has all the makings of a young Tim Thomas.  ;)

The Leafs have to sign them by June 1st or they go back into the draft. Nilsson will be signed but probably stay in the SEL for another season or two much like Granberg. Sparks will also get signed and probably spend a season in the ECHL.

Tom Nilsson was selected for Tre Kronors (Team Sweden) two practice games vs Slovakia. Although not the best are playing it's still a confirmation that he's doing well.
