Leafs re-sign Holzer (1-year, 1-way contract)

I know it's a bit unfair given the gap in talent levels but it'll be interesting to compare Holzer with Schenn this year given that it seems he's his natural replacement in the lineup.

I think some are going to miss Schenn's hitting this season.

For sure... and to be clear (I know I wasn't), I meant gap in talent levels between Philly and Toronto mostly. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how Holzer handles the minutes in comparison.

Komisarek is more of the replacement IMO, or at least while he's still here. I think Holzer will be even more of that defensive defenseman, as I thought Schenn tried too hard to create offense. Maybe it was a little pressure of going so high in the draft and the fan fare he came in with, but I think we have more of what is advertised with Holzer.

Possibly... Though if you had to point to someone who made Schenn expendable, it has to be Holzer I would think.

Franson has also been re- signed no terms yet

Where did you hear that? I can't find anything on it.

This is all I could find, he wants to get it done at least. He's doesn't want out of Toronto at all, so I figure it will be done, if not already.

One thing that will need to be straightened out before the start of the season is his contract status. The 24-year-old is a restricted free agent but he doesn?t plan to go anywhere and it sounds like a new deal is already in the works.

?I love it here in Toronto and we?re in the process of doing something right now,? he said.

That's a lot of faith in a guy who hasn't played more than a handful of NHL games.  I hope they got him pegged.

What's a lot of faith?  It's $575,000.

EDIT:

Now, contrary to popular belief, the one-way contract does not guarantee Holzer a spot with the Maple Leafs. He is still waivers-exempt, the one-way deal simply means he'll make the same payday with the Marlies as he will with the Maple Leafs this season. Still, it's a nice reward. He'll make a big raise on his $62,500 contract from last season.

We still have Phaneuf and Komi.  But yes physical players are hard to find.

Holzer might be another Gunnarson.

I would be happy with that.

He is a little bit nastier than Gunarsson around his crease and in the corners, and I think plays a little bit closer to the vest but it isn't a far off comparison.  Holzer is a prototypical no frills #6 d-man who you can rely on to play a steady shift every time and plays a low risk game.

Right.  Just because it isn't your money doesn't mean it's not real.  So the difference between an AHL salary and an NHL one represents a lot of faith in a guy who hasn't proven a single thing yet.

Or it's a reward for his play thus far, and it's still a small amount in the context of the Leafs.  Seems like a potential cheap option on D.
