Holzer might be another Gunnarson.

He is a little bit nastier than Gunarsson around his crease and in the corners, and I think plays a little bit closer to the vest but it isn't a far off comparison.  Holzer is projects as a prototypical no frills #6 d-man who you can rely on to play a steady shift every time and plays a low risk game.

Thanks, Correcty mcMuch-a-Lot.  :P

Just reinforcing the point that he hasn't proven himself yet, and, as Potvin says, is a potential cheap option.  I just don't see why they didn't give him a 2-way.

I think it's a way to keep the cap hit down on the NHL salary, give a lower NHL salary in exchange for guaranteeing the money.

That and he was an integral part of a deep playoff run while making peanuts in the AHL the last two years. I think it's a combination of reward and incentive, and it's a one year deal. Seems to be about as no risk as you can get for defensive depth and internal development.

I know.. it was a word I neglected to include in my sentence.

I think they gave him a 1-way because there was a threat of him going to Europe to play, and I think they believe he is very much ready to make the jump.  He certainly looked that way this year with the Marlies.

IMO i would rather see Lashoff as the #7 d-man... there is nothing really flashy about Holzer, doesnt seem to be a punishing hitter either.  At least Lashoff has some offensive smarts and creativity back there to go along with solid defensive play.

To supplement Holzer 'earning' his contract, he also played for Germany in 2010 at the Olympics and WC's. His toi was fairly high on a pretty successful run for Germany at the WC, in fact they made it to a medal round though without Korbinian as he was injured the game before...

Bronze game without Hager, Holzer; Felski?s farewell
23-05-10

COLOGNE ? The German national team will have to play without Patrick Hager and Korbinian Holzer in the bronze medal game against Sweden.

Hager suffered a hand injury (broken metacarpus) in the game against Switzerland, and Holzer left the ice yesterday after a check to the boards from Nikolai Kulemin left him symptoms of a slight concussion. He felt better shortly afterwards, but will not play as a precautionary measure.

Holzer only played 1:48 toi, all in the first, against Russia during that game...

Germany got bounced by Canada in the first playoff round at the Olympics 8-2, overall scoring 5 but giving up 20 in 4 games, still, Holzer played just over 13 min toi and was only -1.

In case you're wondering...

I'll admit I haven't seen a whole lot of either Lashoff or Holzer in action, but based on the description of their playing styles and abilities, I want Holzer on the roster, and not as the #7 D-man either. To me that's where Komisarek fits in best, on the roster but preferably never in the lineup.

As it stands now there's already a puck-mover on each pairing, but where they're lacking is in guys who are dependable in their own end.

Holzer's qualifying offer would have been a two-way deal worth $682k. So the Leafs shave a little bit off their cap by giving Holzer NHL money even if he's sent down. It's really not a bad strategy.

Which we have in spades already.  I don't want a puck mover as a 7 dman, I want a guy that can come into the game and play safe dependable D.  Punishing hitter, you mean like Komi, nahhh give me a Sylvain Lefebvre any day of the week.

Thanks. That makes sense.

It's a blog.  Blogs typically aren't held to the same standard as other print media, they're much more personal and informal.

Also, who cares?

If I was Brian I don't know if I would bend to what Scott is looking for in return for Rick.  I would hate to give up on a Nazem or Joe, especially in light of what Dallas has said positively about them.
