Leafs @ Sabres - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

This is a win condition, a nuke on the ice.

I can't really tell what he has changed with his shot (limited sample, varied situations), but the level of deception and unpredictability Matthews adds on top of his power and accuracy to his shot makes it only saveable with some substantial luck on the goalie's part. You can't read his eyes, his stick, his hands, or his feet.

Is it too early to classify that Matthews OT goal as vintage Matthews?

It isn't.

Seemed to catch our latest call up off guard though:

Kudos to Darryl Belfry for helping Auston change up his shot mechanics to keep the goalies guessing. Great podcast on the full 60 with him where he talks about working with Matthews over the summer

Craig Custance had a great podcast with Darryl Belfry before the season about Matthews shot. And then watching Matthews this season, it made total sense. Give er a listen.

Is there an echo in here? ;-)

Also, even if the leafs had lost, this would have been a wonderful game. So entertaining.

I gotta say Dahlin looks like he?ll be incredible. The next Lidstrom.

I look forward to seeing both teams over the next decade

I read your comment literally just after I posted haha. It really was great! He came off as a bit odd at first but I really warmed up to him. He really does, as the old cliche goes, think outside the box.

One of Dubas' first moves was to rope in skills consultant Darryl Belfry to focus on building up a select core of Marlies players in preparation for translating their success to the NHL.

Craig Custance roped Belfry into a Q&A for his podcast!

Matthews is unreal. Great play by Kappy

I was expecting Matthews to start the OT with Kapanen and I was a bit disappointed they went with Marleau. It?ll be Willy next time.

Soon it will be

Matthews-Nylander-Gards

Then

Marner-Tavares-Reilly

Then

Kadri-Kapanen-Dermott

That is nuts.

Why would it ever get past the first shift?

Can we get Matthews to teach Marner or is that not fair?

Probably best to save that after contracts are signed.

Teach Willy. He takes too long setting up his shot, so might as well use that set up time to make it unstoppable. Plus, he's apparently under contract.

herman, the OT winner was almost as pretty as his first.  ;) :D :) :D ;) :) 8) 8) 8) :-* :-* :-*

Literally no one is re-watching that first goal's video anymore.

Didn't Gretzky say the hardest record of his to beat will be his 50 goals in 39 games? Time to step it up, Matthews.

I wonder if Ullmark was screened a bit by BUF 17 (Subotka sp?)?  He wasn't really close to making a glove stop at all.

True -- but it was an elite, matthewsunique goal all the same.
