My main complaint about that... Nylander and Matthews are probably the best shooters-  Marner and Kadri can't shoot like the other two IMO.  I'd rather have one of each weapon:

Marner - Matthews and Nylander - Kadri

I agree with that. There were a few times late last season where Kadri and Nylander were together on the PP and it seemed to work really well. Kadri played sort of low on the right side and was able to set-up Nylander in the slot/left side for a number of good one-timer/scoring opportunities.

But regardless, it's fun that we get to even have conversations like these now. We have more PP players than we know what to do with. There will obviously be plenty of experimenting throughout the season in regards to combinations.

Yup, I remember that coming up last season too. And I'm completely all for just using your 10 best offensively creative skaters on your team for the PP regardless of their position, but I think that still includes Rielly here.

After reading what Potvin linked to about the 4 forward strategy and how it has a significant offensive upside with a (smaller) defensive downside I wonder if one of the ways to mitigate that downside is rather than just going with your absolute best offensive defenseman you might want to go with your best two-way defenseman(which Gardiner arguably is right now) so that you at least have one high value defender out on the ice at all times just in case things do go sour.

By my count there are 12 players changed from this opening roster compared to last years:

Out - Parenteau, Spaling, Lupul, Matthias, Winnik, Boyes, Arcobello, Grabner, Panik, Phaneuf, Reimer, Bernier

In - Mattews, Marner, Nylander, Hyman, Micalek, Martin, Brown, Griffith, Carrick, Zaitsev, Andersen, Enroth

I don't believe Rielly won't be on the PP. He will be. He was unreal in the world cup. I cannot think of any reason why he would not be on the PP, none what so ever.

Opening night line-up last season:

JVR-Kadri-Boyes
Matthias-Bozak-Lupul
Winnik-Spaling-Parenteau
Komarov-Arcobello-Grabner

Hunwick-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Polak
Marincin-Rielly

Bernier

Oh god, remember Nick Spaling?

I remember getting 2 second rounders for him and Polak, which was far more contribution to the rebuild than they managed from Parenteau and Boyes.

Great we open up on the road. The long ceremony lends well to a good road game.

And you're off the case McGarnagle!!

Yah.  This is going to be like a whole new board here this season.  You can't overstate how the crappiness of the last 10+ years has depressed things around here.

This game thread is already longer than most of the ones last season.

Matthews: first NHL goal
Marner: 3 point game, 3 assists

GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!

Standing by it. It's going to be sloppy and very entertaining. Hopefully like the whole season.

This board needs an official season prognostication thread where one can guess the leafs point totals, and wear the cone of shame (or triumph) at the end of the season. Already existing?

I did a season prediction thread in the General forum. It's not specfically about the Leafs point total but that seems to be within its purview.

The media predictions thread?

Hmm, it's kind of hard to establish a winner/bragging rights. I was thinking a simple ending points #, and the team's top 2 scorers for the tiebreaker. Do it or no?

Yeah, I was just saying you could use that thread to make any prediction you want. If you want to start a new one for something specific have at it. I'd probably throw in a guess.
